The Bend metropolitan area, which includes all of Deschutes Dounty, ranked #3 among the nation's best performing small metro areas, according to the Milken Instuitute/Greenstreet Real Estate Partners 2008 Best-Performing Cities Index released Wednesday. Bend, #1 in last year's ranking, was replaced by Midland, Texas, among the 124 small metro areas (235,000-people)examined. Coeur d'Alene, Idaho ranked #2. The index ranks metro areas based on the ability to create and sustain jobs, and includes one-and five-year measurements of employment and salary growth, according to a press release from the Milken Institute. The index also uses four measurements of technology output growth because technology has a crucial role in regional economic growth, the release said.
