Bethlehem has done a nice job of managing their city and has been redeveloping the South Side. Bethlehem Works is a 120-acre (0.49 km2) development site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, based on land formerly owned by Bethlehem Steel. The company discontinued its steelmaking activities at the main Bethlehem plant in 1995 after about 140 years of metal production. With the closing of its local operations, Bethlehem Steel decided to help redevelop the South Side of Bethlehem, and hired outside consultants to develop concept plans on the reuse of the property. The plan was to rename the site "Bethlehem Works" and to use the land for cultural, recreational, educational, entertainment and retail development - including the Smithsonian Institution - an educational and research institution. In 2004, a New York investment group Bethworks Now purchased the Bethlehem Works site for an undisclosed sum, stating that it will follow much of the original development plan. In 2006, Bethlehem City Council vote through zoning changes to allow a portion of the Bethlehem Works site to be used for gambling and, later that year, Bethlehem obtains a license from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to open a slots parlor on the BethWorks development site. In 2009, The Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem opened. The casino, restaurants, the hotel, and shopping complex have opened so far. This has helped to stabalize the community and protect property values.
ZIP Codes: 18015, 18017, 18018 Location Characteristics: Bethlehem is a town in Lehigh and Northampton Counties in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 74,982, making it the seventh largest city in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, Reading, and Scranton.[2]
Bethlehem lies in the center of the Lehigh Valley, a region of 731 square miles (1,893 kmē) that is home to more than 800,000 people. The Valley embraces a trio of cities (Bethlehem, Allentown and Easton) within two counties (Lehigh and Northampton), making it Pennsylvania's third-largest metropolitan area. Smaller than Allentown but larger than Easton, Bethlehem is the Lehigh Valley's second most populous city.
There are three general sections of the city, North Bethlehem, South Bethlehem and West Bethlehem. Each of these sections blossomed at different times in the city's development and each contains areas recognized under the National Register of Historic Places. Zip codes that use the address Bethlehem totaled 116,000 in population in the year 2000. These zip codes include Bethlehem Township.
In July 2006, Money magazine placed Bethlehem as number 88 on its "Top 100 Best Places to Live."
