Countrywide Home Loans, Inc was rated the number one mortgage lender in the Fort Worth metropolitan statistical area(MSA) for 1997, according to HMDA statistics. The lender provided nearly $178.4 billion in mortgage financing to home buyers and homeowners in the Fort Worth area in 1997. More than $153 billion was used to finance home purchases, while about $25 billion went towards refinancing existing mortgages.

The company attributes its success in the local market to providing branch offices with managers who are also underwriters whith the authority to approve home loans locally.
