For the last few years, Real Estate technology solutions have been
predominantly IBM/Windows compatible. "Resistance is futile," and those daring
agents who refused to trade their Macs in for an IBM PC had to either use
company computers to access MLS data or depend on emulation software like
MacEmmulate. These packages weren’t always reliable and if you tried to call
your MLS or your company IT department, no one can help you because they all
use PC’s.
With the promise of multi-platform web based solutions such as the RMLS
WebMLS, agents can search for properties, create CMA’s and flyers using a
browser. In addition, multi-platform viewers like Acrobat Reader allow my
department to distribute 6-month company statistics in PDF files. So which Mac
is perfect for the real estate business?
- The "delicious" iMac at $1199 comes in 5 yummy colors. The systems has a
built-in 15' monitor with 32MB RAM, 333MHZ processor, 6 gigabyte hard drive,
56K modem, and 24 speed CD-ROM. The machine is preloaded with Internet
Explorer, AppleWorks (formally ClarisWorks and reminds me of Microsoft Works),
and more.
- PowerMac G3 Desktop starts at $1599. Up to 128 MB RAM, 6 or 12 Gig Hard
drive (expandable to 100G).
- The new iBook laptop is available in two 'juicy' colors and will ship in
late September 1999. I personally prefer the blueberry iBook and it is equipped
with 300MHz processor, 12' display, 32MB RAM, and 3G hard drive.
- Accessories anyone? The iBook accompanied with the new AirPort wireless
network is a mobile agent’s dream. You can access your e-mail, printers, share
files, or surf the Internet from anywhere!
As you can see, this year is going to be an exciting one for Mac users
everywhere. Although I am an avid PC-er, I too am anxiously waiting for the
AirPort to use with my new Lime iMac.
Here are some additional Mac sources for Real Estate:
Lead Commander for Mac is contact management software that has several
