Putting The Fun Into Peak Performance

Are you having enough fun? Are you learning something every day and gradually getting better and better? Do you have to make yourself pick up that phone to initiate new business or do you come in excited and jazzed about it? If the joy, learning and curiosity are missing, let’s take a look at re-energizeing. Tim Gallwey, in The Inner Game of Work, found that the elements of peak performance included enjoyment plus learning , as well as a focus on taking action. Adding fun and growth can radically enhance performance. A focus on performance alone, will often produce a struggle to continue to "do" tasks that "should" be done. Have you ever made the phone calls like a robot who is just making it’s numbers? The self-discipline involved to do this is great and many agents fall short. As a coach, agents often ask me to help them to stop procrastinating in this area or to help them understand why they don’t want to and why there is no passion anymore. While a coach can help with these things by being a structure for the accountability part, I find a shift in performance comes about naturally when we discover what is interfering with the natural passion. The enjoyment and learning that Gallwey feels are essential bring the juice and drive back to the game. Changing the focus enhances success and makes peak performance more easily achievable.

Four Action Tips For Peak Performance

LEARN: During the next week, every day, choose three activities that will be learning experiences. The goal is to learn with each activity and to use that to better your performance the next time. As you make the phone call, go out with buyers or on the listing appointment, instead of strategizing what actions you need to take to "close" the prospect, rate on a 1-10 the prospect’s interest, noticing what you say or do that sparks their enthusiasm and where it falls flat. After each activity, list what worked and what didn’t. Approach everything you do as practice and see what could improve….even things like standing in line or putting paperwork away. Life is a series of individual moments—practice being the best you can be and noticing what’s missing.

ENJOYMENT: Think of someone you love working with or who you are attracted to…..I bet there is an element of lightness and fun in how that person approaches life.. In those three situations each day you’ve chosen for learning, also focus on enjoying yourself and the other person. Let go of the thought of closing and for each activity, just be present and have fun. Before long, you’ll find you are attracting people to you as surely as if you had a magnet.

JUST DO IT: Take the action you know will take you closer to your dreams. Don’t spend more time getting ready or strategizing when you KNOW you need to be taking action Successful agents do when others are still thinking about it. On those days when you don’t "feel" like prospecting or taking the right actions, take action anyway, and you’ll see a shift in your feelings. Don’t wait until you feel like it! Your feelings come and go……Just do it!

BE OBVIOUS: Nothing beats personal contact. Go to places where prospects are. If you are having fun and being curious, you’ll be surprised at what you attract. Where could you go today that would position you in front of your perfect prospect? Is it the golf course or tennis club? Perhaps a charity cocktail party or a breakfast leads group. When people hear how much FUN your business is, they will want to work with you or refer to you.

If work has not been effortless and fun lately, implement these four actions tips, to increase your production: Lighten up, learn, take action and show up! Then practice being the best that you can be. You’ll like the results.
