CAR Grants $25K to Santa Clara Housing Trust

The trustees of the Issues Mobilization Political Action Committee (IMPAC) of the California Association of Realtors (CAR) recently approved a $25,000 grant to the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County. Their gift, the first of its kind by CAR, is in response to a proposal and presentation submitted to them by the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors (SCCAOR), who, earlier this year, made a pledge of $50,000 to the Trust.

"We invited CAR to partner with us, and turn our mutual concerns into practical, powerful and effective action. CAR's grant sends an important message to associations and smaller corporation across the state-that we all have an important role to play in addressing our community's worsening housing crisis," said Carl San Miguel, SCCAOR President.

The Housing Trust is a broad-based working coalition of more than 70 public and private sector housing leaders, lenders, environmental organizations, city and county officials dedicated to building a revolving loan fund and grant making program, complementing and leveraging other housing resources; thereby providing housing for the homeless, affordable rental housing for families and individuals, and first-time home buyer's assistance. "We are excited to be able to participate in this innovative public/private partnership," said CAR President Richard F. Gaylord. "The IMPAC contribution is one more step toward solving housing affordability issues facing job-rich Silicon Valley."

The Trust Fund's two-year fund raising campaign was formally kicked off in July 1999 - their goal is to raise $20 million. The $20 million fund will focus on three areas:

  • First-time homebuyers assistance for 800 families.
  • Affordable rental housing for 3,000 Silicon Valley families.
  • Incentive grants and loans to build transitional and permanent housing for the formerly homeless or persons at-risk of homelessness.

"This generous grant from the California Association of Realtors, combined with the donation from the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors will leverage $750,000 in the name of organized real estate for the Trust," says Project Director Gisela Bushey. "What a tremendous example of how groups can come together to make a real difference in the lives of individuals and families in need. We are truly grateful for this grant, and the positive response and impact on our housing crisis it represents."

To-date, more than $10.2 million dollars has been raised towards the $20 million goal. The California Association of Realtors joins the County of Santa Clara, the Cities of San Jose, Santa Clara and Milpitas, the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors, Mid-Peninsula Bank, Nortel Networks, the Valley Foundation, Intel Corporation, Knight Ridder, the San Jose Mercury News, the Santa Clara County Farm Bureau, Adobe, Applied Materials, Cisco Systems, Kaufman & Broad and Solectron, as a force that has stepped forward to help make the HTF a reality in our community.
