Learn To Be Consistent

You can never give up on a client or transaction. There is always a positive; you just have to keep looking for it. It is so easy to give up when the going gets tough, but if you hang in there just a little longer, the sale comes or you find answers to the problems with your transaction. There are several exercises that will help you along the way.

First of all, keeping your attitude positive is always the answer. But that isn’t always easy. So, what can you do to keep going when you really want to just call it a day, go home and turn off the telephone? There are several things that work:

  • Take a break from whatever needs to be done. How about just an hour or maybe a day away? Get away from real estate completely during that time. You will be refreshed and have new energy, mental fortitude, and some answers. This can be as simple as a walk in the park for an hour or a long drive to the mountains or the beach for a day.

  • Call someone who thinks you are great. This could be a family member, a previous client, or a good friend. The point is that you know that this person thinks that you are a good person and knows what you are doing. They think you are a success no matter whether you had a sale that week or not.

  • Re-live a success. One of the easiest ways to get back to a great attitude is re-live a sale that closed; or a listing that you were successful in obtaining when there was a great deal of competition for it. Go over every moment in your mind right up to the final close or signature. It helps you realize that you are totally capable of great things.

  • Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Remember that whoever is giving you a “hard time” isn’t doing it because it’s personal, it’s because they are worried about something. Try to see other people’s point of view. It will make your problem solving abilities much greater thereby giving you that all-important “can do” attitude.

  • Don’t put off hard things. If you take care of something really difficult to do first, it makes everything else easy. It also frees up your mind to concentrate on other things. Immediately you have a “lighter” attitude.

Being consistent can be learned by not only having the right attitude, but by writing down in your calendar or palm pilot what prospecting you should do daily. When it shows up as something to do, then it is a job that needs to be done and you do it.

As Realtors we have no formal job description - so create one! One way to be consistent is to write down what you are going to do daily, weekly, monthly - just like you would if you were a salaried person. You know what time you need to be at work, what you need to do that day, what is important to the boss, etc. You are the boss, what would you have yourself do every day, week, month? Write it down and do it.

All of these ideas will help you be consistent. Once anything is a habit, you will do better in all aspects of the business. We need consistency so that we don’t have to go through the ups and downs of this business. It is much better to have closings every month of the year.

Good luck with your new consistent habits!
