Getting Organized: Be Patient, Diligent, and You'll See Results

If you're like many Americans, the first few weeks of the new year are spent reorganizing, refreshing, and ultimately reducing household clutter. But where do you begin?

The easiest way to tackle major home organization, experts say, is to take one room at a time and to stay focused. Don't try to do too much in one day or weekend. Set a goal to organize one room or part of a room a weekend and by spring you'll be free of guilt and able to enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather.

Getting organized is a good idea for everyone, but it's especially important if you plan on selling your house this year. When you show your house, you'll want simplicity and order. Why not get a head start now?

Sue Becker, owner of From Piles to Smiles Professional Organizing Service, says getting organized doesn't necessarily mean being neat and tidy.

"It's about being able to find things when you need them, and getting things done when they need to be done," she said.

While the offer is very attractive, it's putting forth the energy that prevents many of us from putting the organizing vehicle into full gear.

"Many people are hesitant to put the effort into getting organized because they doubt they can maintain an organized state of affairs," say Eileen Roth, founder of Everything in Its Place and Elizabeth Miles, an author specializing in peak performance, in their book "Organizing for Dummies" (Hungry Minds, 2000). "Like going on a diet, why bother if the excess pounds or clutter are just going to come back?"

But once you get organized, they say, your mind and body will be so grateful that you'll be eager to maintain.

Professional organizers have a few tips for diving into the seemingly impossible task of getting organized.

  • Visualize your goal. Do you want a home office in which you can see your desk, find important papers quickly, and have important dates laid out on your calendar? Maybe you dream of a playroom in which toys are sorted by type and placed in color-coded tubs and your kids have a clear table area to do their homework, do puzzles, and play games.

  • Begin with one room at a time. Stick with it until it's done before beginning another room, otherwise you may feel overwhelmed and give up. It's also easy to get sidetracked if you try to organize more than one room at a time.

  • Develop a plan. How will you achieve your perfect home office or kid-friendly playroom? What will you need to get rid of? What will you need to add? Gather the supplies you'll need.

  • Begin organizing. Stick to it until it's done, even if you only have a few minutes each day or week to getting organized.

  • Don't be afraid to get rid of things. If you haven't used the item in the past year, chances are you won't again. Give extra items you don't use anymore to charity. Recycle or throw away the extra papers and clutter.

  • Establish patterns and schedules - an annual purging of everyone's closets before buying new school clothes, establishing a weekly grocery shopping, laundry, or housecleaning day on the same day each week, and so on. Clean out the garage each spring or fall. Purge a few files every day. The more routines that you can set, the faster and smoother things can go and the stronger your organizational systems can be.

  • Share - and delegate. Give each family member a responsibility.

Staying organized is an ongoing effort. Once you make the first initial effort, maintaining organization should become a part of your daily routine, experts say. If you stay diligent about it for just a few minutes each day, putting items away as soon as they enter the house, you'll reap the benefits, reducing stress and saving time.
