No Scents Is Not Nonsense

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or "MCS" has been discussed in the medical literature for 50 years or so. But it was disregarded for most of that time. Now, people are seeing the light.

The syndrome makes some people react to fragrances and certain chemicals. Often they have trouble breathing. Sometimes they cannot concentrate or they become very ill. Some people report that they feel as if they are going to die after they are exposed to some fragrances and chemicals.

The culprits vary by person. Often people react to perfume, deodorants, hair spray and scented cleaners. But the list is nearly endless.

For years these people have been viewed as crazy - its all in their head. But that has started to change and people understand that this is real. Some towns do as well.

For example, the 268-year-old town of Shutesbury, Massachusetts, which consists of 1,800 people, made history when it segregated, by fragrance, its annual meeting. Scented people sat in one place, non-scented somewhere else.

That is a great start. But for many, that doesn't work. Many people with MCS simply cannot be in the same room with offending fragrances or chemicals. Period.

And we all need to take note. Public accommodations will eventually have to be made so that people with MCS do not become ill. Scented separation is a great start. It's a move in the right direction. But it is not the ultimate answer.

Homeowners need to at least be aware of this issue. Are you having a house party? Scents may really harm your some of your guests. If you know your guests and know they do not suffer from MCS, that is one thing. But if you are hosting a social gathering which will include some people you do not know very well, you should assume that some mightl be impacted.

How will you feel if your guest becomes ill? You will feel badly and this can be avoided. Simply avoid using fragrances at these times.

According to a September 1998 column in the "American Family Physician," doctors need to ensure that they have a solid physician-patient relationship in the case of MCS sufferers. "This is possible if the physician is respectful of the patient, compassionate about the symptoms and genuinely interested in helping to evaluate and manage the patient's problems."

Why is this necessary advice? Because for years, doctors labeled these people crazy . Sufferers have grown to distrust the medical community. It will take a lot to win back that trust.

Good job, Shutesbury. Old dogs can learn new tricks. But there is a lot more that needs to be done for MCS sufferers.
