CIPPREC is a national commercial real estate association comprised of the largest owners and developers of commercial real estate in Canada including REITs, publicly traded and large private companies, banks, brokerages, crown corporations, investment dealers, life companies, and pension funds which own income-producing real estate. Its members own in excess of C $70 billion in real estate assets located in the major centers across Canada, including retail, office, industrial, hotel, multi-family residential, single-family residential and seniors housing.

Although CIPPREC does sell publications such as The Accounting Standards Handbook, which is endorsed by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, CIPPREC offers free downloads through its site, including:

  • The Living Canadian Real Estate Textbook - "Canada's authoritative learning tool for commercial real estate." This online textbook is reportedly used by students in the Real Property Program at York University's Schulich School of Business. Topics range from property rights, title and tenure to planning, zoning and land use regulation.

  • Report on REITs - An introduction to real estate investment trusts.

  • REIT & greet - Real estate income trusts are all the rage in both investment and commercial property circles. Lawyers in both disciplines need to know all about REITs -- but they also need to know about the risks that come with them ... National, Vol.12, No. 6, October 2003, pp. 26-42, by Bev Cline. (October 15, 2003)

  • Standard Telecommunications License Agreement - to be used whenever a telecom provider seeks access to a multi-tenant building.

  • National Standard Office Lease - Canadian national standard office lease allows the parties in a transaction to focus on deal terms instead of negotiating standard terms.

  • Terminology Standards - standard definitions for the industry to increase the consistency in the use of terms.

Although CIPPREC's principal mission is to lobby the industry's point of view to governments and research changes relevant to its members, it also develops national real estate standards like those listed above and is the principal sponsor of national annual real estate conferences, which include:

    • The Real Estate Forums held in Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto
    • RealLeasing
    • RealFinance
    • The National Summit on Corporate Real Estate
    • The REIT Conference.

CIPPREC's The Canadian REIT Handbook will be released soon (Winter 2004). Canadian law firm Goodmans LLP has been appointed as author of The Handbook, which is expected to address many complex and challenging issues ranging from convertible debenture financings and open or closed structured conversions to external/internal management models through a broad spectrum of other matters related from legal, tax, financial and business perspectives.
