There are some very simple steps you can take that make a big impact on the health of the environment. Here are five tips from our experts.

First, recycle. Most cities have recycling programs in effect, or you may have drop off dumpsters and centers near your home. From cardboard, to paper and plastic bags, to glass jars and milk jugs, there are hundreds of daily items that you can send to recycling instead of to a landfill.

Another great green tip for your household during the winter season is to be sure your insulation, windows, and seals are up to standard. Any cracks and openings around windows and doors can dramatically increase your energy consumption.

The third tip is also simple. Make the switch to cleaning supplies that are free of harsh chemicals. There are now great options for everything from laundry detergent to surface cleaners. And you can even make your own cleaners. Mix together 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Use this mixture to clean up dirt and soap scum.

Next, consider carpooling, walking, or using public transit. Have you ever noticed that most cars during rush hour traffic hold just one person? This is a huge drain on our environment. If you live close to work you could walk or bike. Not only will this reduce your carbon footprint, but it will help whip you into shape!

The final green resolution tip has to do with sweaters. Turning your heat down even a few degrees can save you green, all while you go green! So put on a sweater the next time you feel chilly, and resist the urge to crank up the thermostat.

These are just a few of the hundreds of green tips out there. Using even one can help you go green in the new year.
