On the other side of the coin, first-timers can require a lot of extra time and care. Chances are everything about the process is new to them. Being new to the process of spending this large of sum of money means they’ll need extra help understanding what it all means and becoming comfortable with signing on the dotted line.

It requires a lot of patience to work with first-time homebuyers.

First-timers may not actually know what they want. Does a townhouse or condo fit their style, or would a larger home in the suburbs be a better fit?

You may also need to steer them in the right direction when it comes to pricing. Many first-timers know nothing about market trends. How much does a 1 bedroom condo cost in their favorite trendy neighborhood? Can they really afford their dream house at this time?

It will be your responsibility to guide them.

First-time home buyers can be gun-shy when it comes to pulling the trigger on an actual purchase. You may show them their dream house right out the gate and then still end up showing them a dozen other homes.

Buyers may need your help in deciding what is a good offer and good deal. They need your experience to help them wet their feet in the real estate market.

Explaining the homebuying process will be an important part of your job as a first-timer's real estate agent. There’s a lot to understand. From home inspections, to appraisals, to terminology, it’s a brave new world.

Patience means taking on the extra burden of happily answering the many elementary questions they’ll pepper you with, going on numerous showings, and being prepared for the long haul.

First-time buyers can take months to make a final decision. Just remember that in the end it’s all worth it. You’ll have helped a young buyer make the purchase of a lifetime.
