Moving can certainly be a very stressful time for a family. It requires a lot of change, and that can produce a lot of stress. Moving to a new home can create even more stress for a person than going through a divorce. It can certainly be a somewhat scary experience.

One of the most frustrating things about moving is the physical process of packing all your possessions for a move. It can be a lot of work. If you make mistakes, you may lose some of your valuable and precious possessions forever. To avoid mistakes, you need to take precautions. Below are some packing tips to help make your move a lot easier.

Stick to a Schedule

One of the biggest mistakes a person or family makes when preparing for a move is procrastinating. No matter what you may hope, the physical process of packing is likely to take up much more time than you first expect. If you don’t schedule enough time to complete the packing and stick to that schedule, you will assuredly run out of time.

A good rule of thumb to keep is to schedule twice the amount of time you think you need to pack. Also, give yourself a buffer of a few days afterward. That way, you won’t be as stressed when moving day actually arrives. One bedroom apartment will require one to two days to pack for a move. However, a five bedroom house can take up to a week.

Pack Items by Room

Another common mishap occurs when a person just begins packing items from random rooms into the same boxes. This is always a mistake. If your possessions are mixed up like that, it will assure that you will have a much harder time finding what you need when you unpack. It will also increase the possibility that many of your things will end up lost.

Instead, pack items by room. Kitchen utensils will go in boxes labeled kitchen. Items from the den will go into a box labeled den. This may require a bit more organization while you pack. However, it will be well worth it since it will ensure that the unpacking process is far more orderly and less frustrating.

Protect Breakables

While many people try very hard to take care when packing their possessions for a move, there also seems to be some things that still manage to get broken anyway. You need to take some extra care with things that could break to ensure they remain in one piece from the moment you pack them to the moment you unpack them in your new home. This includes things like dishes, glasses, artwork, knickknacks and more.

Often, people use bubble wrap for this purpose. This is certainly an effective means for protecting breakable items. However, you may also not want to spend a fortune on bubble wrap. In that case, you can improvise by using things like shirts and blankets to wrap certain items. Cloth can help protect breakable items if enough of a soft buffer is provided.

Throw Some Things Out

Lastly, while you may wish to pack everything you own, it’s not always a good idea. Preparing for a move is also a good time to get rid of some things you don’t need. If that’s the case, you may also want to rent a dumpster. Alternatively, you can hold a yard sale to make an extra bit of profit. However, packing is time-consuming. You may want to think about getting rid of things well before you put up a for sale by owner sign in your yard.

Moving can be extremely stressful. However, it’s something you’re likely to do many times. A person moves about 12 times on average during their life. Use some of the tips above to make sure the process of packing for your move goes much smoother so you won’t have to worry about something going wrong.
