Moving To a New Home? Take Care of Your Power First

Written by Posted On Thursday, 30 November 2017 00:18

There are a lot of things that one usually has to keep track of when they are about to switch homes. What to pack and take with you, getting all the movers in order, making sure that you have all your utilities ready for the moving day, there is a lot to take care of.

Taking care of your power before you head out to your new home is essential, and is something that a lot of homeowners tend to miss. Missing this crucial element can quickly burn a hole through your pocket. If your home is not disconnected from its power correctly, you can end up paying the electricity bills for two houses instead of one.

Even if you aren’t actively using appliances at your old home, you are still consuming a bit of power, simply because of being switched on. In addition, you always have to pay additional customer taxes to the power company that is supplying you with the service.

Disconnecting Your Home

It is essential to do a proper disconnection of your entire home to ensure that this does not happen. The power companies themselves are the ones who have to disconnect the service, but unless one approaches them, they won’t do it themselves. Power companies require their customers to schedule an appointment so that they can come and carry out their work.

It does take a reasonable amount of time to do it, and the ideal time to do carry out the disconnection is one day after you move out. This ensures that you have power until your very last day at home, lest you be left to move without any electricity. It is not advised to do it on the same day as your move since it can get a little too chaotic while trying to do multiple things at once.

It is not uncommon for power companies to charge their customers a certain fee for the termination of their service, but this may vary from company to company. It can also vary upon the terms and conditions of your power supply, especially in the case when you are seeking to terminate the power connection prematurely.

Connecting Your Home

The next step that one usually takes after disconnecting the power from their old home is to connect the new service to their new home. The process of getting a new electricity connection set up is incredibly easy. All you need to do is make a phone call and put in an application, and you are good to go. Most companies once again charge for a new connection into a new home, so it becomes essential to check up on the rates that service providers provide before going in for a power service.

Changing Up Your Power Company

A move is one of the best times to change up your power company. Be it for the reason of better service, or a better budget, there are numerous reasons to change a service provider. Let’s say you lived in Sydney and were accustomed to using one particular service provider. You are now moving and need an electricity connection in Melbourne, and the old service provider is not considered to be the best fit for your new home.

It is the perfect time to switch to a new power company to get a better degree of service and options that fit your budget well. It is always advised to go for power companies that are well reputed in the area that you are moving to avoid any disappointment in the service or inflated bills that make you pay more than what you need to.
