Why smart homeowners have more than one vacuum

Written by Posted On Friday, 09 February 2018 07:16

According to Consumer Reports, 43 percent of consumers own two or three vacuums.  While this may be suprising to many on the surface, it actually makes sense when you really think about it.  That's because we have multiple surfaces throughout our house (i.e. hardwood floors, carpet, steps, tile in the bathrooms, etc.) and different surfaces have different needs.  Also, sometimes we have different types of reasons to vacuum (e.g. regular weekly cleaning vs a spill in one area).

There really is no "one size fits all" vacuum as you have different requirements for the different surfaces.  So, I want to share my thoughts on the best types of vacuums for the different surfaces.

And, Consumer reports found that less than half of their survey respondents were satisfied with their current vacuum.  Part of the problem may be that they have the wrong tool for the job: For example, you don’t need a high powered suction vacuum with all the bells and whistles to suction up scattered cereal, and using a handheld vacuum on carpeting is like using a fork to rake leaves.  It's important to recognize that there is no vacuum that does it all.  It's best to have the right tool for the right job.

So here are a few quick thoughts on the subject.

Hardwood flooring

Most people don't realize that you need a DIFFERENT vacuum on hardwood flooring than for carpet.  You'll find that most vacuums in the marketplace are rated based on suction on carpet.  But, many of these vacuums can actually damage your hardwood floors.  You can read more about that in this article which showcases the best vacuums for hardwood floors.

My top pick for effectiveness and value for hardwood floors it the Bissell hard floor expert deluxe canister vacuum cleaner.  It a fabulous vacuum specifically designed for hardwood floors, and it's reasonably priced (often less than $150).

why buy multiple vacuums - Bissell

If budget isn't an issue, consider the Miele Complete C3 Canister vacuum. It's substantially more expensive, but it is probably the best vacuum in the market place.

Best vacuum for carpet and pet hair

If you're looking for a great value vacuum that has super strong suction for pet hair, then I'd recommend the Kenmore Elite Pet Friend 31130.  This is actually Consumer Reports #1 pick and it's a wonderful value.

If you can afford an upgrade, consider the Miele Complete C3 Canister vacuum.  This is the top of the line and actually works exceptionally well for both hardwood and carpet.

Best handheld vacuum

The clear choice for handheld vacuums is this Black + Decker handheld vacuum.  It's the #1 best seller on Amazon and their top recommendation.

Best robotic vacuum

When it comes to programmable robotic vacuums, the Roomba is still the #1 choice.  Check out the iRobot Roomba 880 for a reasonably priced robotic vacuum.
