Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Home

Spring brings a wonderful change in the season and a desire to be outdoors for most people in the United States. For most homeowners, that means dragging the patio furniture out of the basement and getting things ready to spend as much time outside as possible.

The Usual Suspects
No matter how often you clean the house, it seems like it's always dirty. Those hard to reach nooks and crannies throughout the home just love to gather dust, dirt, and grime. As cliche as it is, there is nothing like a whole house top to bottom deep clean when spring starts. Make note of places that seem unusually dirty and could probably be cleaned more often. Try to add these spots to your usual cleaning routine to get to them on a more regular basis, then next year's spring cleaning won't be so bad!

Appliances and Landscaping Equipment
When's the last time you cleaned your washing machine? If it took a minute to think about it may be a good time to get to that during your spring clean. Thankfully that task is as easy as dumping a quart of vinegar and a cup of baking soda inside and putting it on the hottest and longest setting. This mixture knocks lose any debris or grime that has accumulated over time. It's also a good idea to check the condition of your anode rod in your water heater (if you have a tank style model like this). Anode rods are magnesium or aluminum rods that live inside your water heater and protect the tank from corroding. They sacrifice themselves and erode over time. Most anode rods last about 5 years so it's important to note the condition of yours that way you have no unexpected failures in your tank. Another thing to add to your list is trying to start your lawn mower and or weed whacker. After sitting all winter, they tend to be more difficult to start and it's never fun trying to fuss with it when you desperately need to mow your grass.

The Great Junk Removal
If your home is anything like mine, you acquire a lot of stuff throughout the course of the year. Some (and hopefully most) stuff become mainstays and add a definitive value to your home, others not so much. Start going through each room and deciding what positively is not adding value to your life and needs to go. Bonus points for setting aside items with a higher value for a garage sale, but I recommend cross-selling it on Let Go, OfferUp, Craigslist, local Facebook page or any other avenue to at least recoup some of the initial investment.

Finishing Touches
Lastly, it's important to put those finishing touches on your home when you complete your spring clean. Find some spring inspired candles, get some fresh flowers and embrace the soon to be here warm weather and outdoors!
