There’s no doubt about it that the type of roof your home has makes a big difference on the overall aesthetics and property value, and today in 2018 with such an intensely competitive market all over the country it’s always a good investment to give your home a more unique look from the top down.

We’re very lucky to have teamed up with a roofer manhattan specialist to help us with this list of the pros and cons of some of the more popular roof types out on homes everywhere, and by going through this article you’ll be more prepared to understand what makes a good roof good, and what makes good roofs better than others as well.

Gable

This type of roof is also known as a peaked or pitched roof, and it’s definitely one of the most popular roofs all across the country.

Some of the pros of gable roofs are that they are great at shedding any kind of snow or water and are great for ventilation and creating good attic storage spaces at the top of homes. They’re also relatively inexpensive to design and construct.

Some cons of gable roofs are that they can be a problem with high winds, especially in hurricane areas. These kinds of roofs can potentially collapse in disaster times, and winds are always a problem for some gable roofs.

Hip

This type of roof has slopes on all four sides that are all equal length and form a ridge at the top. Some of the pros of hip roofs are that they are much more stable than gable roofs and are overall very sturdy. The major con of hip roofs is that they are generally very expensive to build because of its complexity.

Mansard

This is also known as a French roof, and it’s four-sided and has double slopes that form a rather low-pitched roof, but the slop is very steep. The pros of these roofs are that they great for extra living spaces towards the upper areas of a home, so you can make extra bedrooms instead of attics, which is called a garret. The cons of this roof are that these roofs aren’t ideal for snow, and there is definitely some extra costs.

Gambrel

This is kind of like a barn roof and has two major slopes, and it also has very steep slopes. Some of the pros of gambrel roofs are that they provide extra living space, but some of the cons are that they are not recommended for areas with high winds or that get a lot of snow. This is because the roof has the potential to collapse with extreme pressure being put on it.

There are so many different types of roofs that we could continue to talk about, but the ones here are just some of the more popular roofs that we have noticed all across the United States.
