3 Mistakes Realtors Make with their Attire

Written by Posted On Monday, 17 February 2020 10:09

The professional of a realtor is hard enough. It’s tedious enough to solicit homeowners with the idea that you are intelligent enough to list their home, or even represent them in a new home purchase.  In addition you have to be an expert in the field. This entails knowing the specific markets that you specialize in. Plus you need to be knowledgeable with software, websites, and you are always going to be attached to your personal devices.

While your efforts may be focused on many important items, you don’t want to overlook the attire you wear on a daily basis. You have heard that you never get a second chance to make a first impression? Well that certainly holds true here.

Here are the top three mistakes you don’t want to make with your wardrobe.

 Skip the Gym Wear

Just because you may not work in a professional setting doesn’t mean that you can don the latest gym wear. Even though you may think Luluemon is in and hip, your potential clients probably won’t think it is. A customer can wear gym clothing but you certainly shouldn’t.  This also extends to tennis shoes and flip flops. This sends the message that your not too serious about your profession. (even though that you may be). A nice pair of shoes don’t have to be uncomfortable. And they will last a long time. You can also potentially write this off as a business expense.

Avoid Pop Culture and Vintage T-Shirts

These sorts of shirts scream one word; Unprofessional. Your main goal as a realtor is to promote your knowledge and intelligence in the field. When you start wearing these sorts of clothes, you are telling the world just the opposite. Flip the script. If you were a customer, would you choose the agent wearing a professional wardrobe or one who was wearing a shirt that said “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”?

But if you live in a warm weather city, a nice shirt or a collared short sleeve shirt should be just fine.

Remember you can also overcome objections from clients by dressing the part. Look professional, convey authority, and give the perception that  you know what you are doing can certainly go a long way.

Go Easy on the Makeup

When you meet with clients, imagine you are on a job interview. You don’t want to distract anyone from the main goal at hand. Alison Doly recommends makeup that closely resembles your skin tone.

She mainly says make a great first impression and not to overdo it.

Also leave the fake eyelashes at home. You don’t want to have any wardrobe malfunctions.

Still on the fence about a particular piece of clothing? The next best step would be to ask a friend, or better yet, a business associate. This should certainly help clear things. up.

While we are on the subject, tight fitting clothing, or exposing parts of your abdomen should be avoided. Ripped jeans are not cool or gaudy jewerly. And avoid shorts when possible.

If you are travelling with clients, be sure and pack the right clothing and other items.

Don't Lose Your Clients Trust

When your a realtor, there isn't much worse that can occur to you than losing your clients. Once you have lost their trust, it's very hard to overcome. That is why you want to make sure they belive that not only are you a professional in your industry, but that nobody knows more than you do.

  • it's your business   so dress professionally
  • Know your market
  • answer your clients quetsions as quickly as possible and with confidence
