4 Tips for a Successful Cross-Country Move

Moving can feel chaotic even when it's just across town, so imagine what the adventure might feel like if you're going to another state. Planning and executing the transportation of your family and your belongings across state lines can be time-consuming but keeping these tips in mind will help you create a more successful plan.

1. Get Rid of Clutter

The fewer things you need to move, the easier the transition will be. Before you start packing, declutter every room in your current home. When you find things that haven't been used in at least six months (excepting holiday décor and family heirlooms), separate them into three piles: trash, sell, and donate. Throw out broken, stained, or otherwise unsightly items. Sell things that are in good condition but of no use to your family. Finally, donate things that are still in good condition but aren't quite popular enough to sell. Consider local homeless shelters or church organizations when donating. Most of them will even pick up the items from your home.

2. Create a Moving Budget

Nobody wants to get to the big day and realize they don't have enough funds to complete the move successfully. Create your budget well in advance. In addition to hiring movers or renting a van or two, remember to include the packing supplies you'll need, such as tape, boxes, markers, garbage bags (these are great for packing soft items and filling in space in the truck), and bubble wrap. You'll also need to budget for fuel to drive to your new home, and if the trip will take multiple days, you'll need money for hotels and food. Be sure to add some wiggle room in case of an emergency, such as a flat tire or breakdown on the highway.

3. Do Work in the New Place Before Moving In

Are you buying a fixer-upper, or do you simply not like the walls in your new place? If you plan to paint walls, remodel the kitchen, or do any other interior work on your new home, do it before you move all your stuff in. An empty space is much easier to work in, and you aren't likely to have a lot of extra energy after such a big move anyway. As a bonus, it is extra-relaxing to be in your new home after the move without worrying about when you'll get to those old chandeliers or that weird trim.

4. Hire Professional Movers

Instead of juggling work, the kids, and heading up your move, consider hiring professional movers like the ones at White Glove Moving Company NYC Movers. A professional moving company provides plenty of services. If you prefer, the movers can simply load, transport, and unload your items. However, many companies also provide packing and unpacking services, taking even more of the burden off.

Although some cross-country moves are unexpected, many people have thought about their moves for months or years before taking the steps. If you're thinking about moving out of state, give yourself plenty of time to find a new home and plan and execute the move itself. Being patient and taking your time helps to ensure your transition is nearly seamless and makes it easier for you to settle into your new place.
