Smart Ways to Improve Your Home’s Cold-Weather Energy Efficiency

Written by Posted On Friday, 16 November 2018 14:23

The holiday season is approaching quickly. Not only does this promise family gatherings, but this also promises the arrival of cold weather. If you’re looking to save money on your energy bills to put towards holiday gifts, you should consider implementing a few of these smart ways to improve your home’s cold-weather energy efficiency.

Upgrade Your Windows

Your windows are your first line of defense against the howling winds of the winter season. If your home is old, your windows are likely just as old. Old windows can pose a large threat to the energy efficiency of your home. The seals around the glass panes become damaged due to age, leaving openings through which outside air enters your home. This creates cold drafts. Cold drafts will cause the temperature in your home to drop, forcing your furnace to work harder and longer to heat your home. This process repeated every day for months can add up to a lot of money wasted on your monthly energy bill. This money would be better spent investing in window upgrades for your home. There are replacement options you could try here or any number of DIY options you could find with a quick Google search.

Seal Your Doors

The doors in your home that lead to the outside are common culprits of cold drafts. While modern doors possess additions and accessories that prevent drafts, older doors lack these additions. If your home is outfitted with older doors that are becoming drafty during cold weather, there are steps you can take to improve their ability to block drafts. The first step you can take is to install adhesive weather stripping along the edges of your outside doors. This will seal gaps between your door and the frame. The second step you can take is to purchase and install a rubber draft seal along the bottom edge of your doors. Both of these measures will prevent cold drafts from entering your home and make it more energy efficient.

Adjust Your Thermostat

A clever way to save money on your energy costs during the winter season is to lower your thermostat a few degrees when no one is inside the house. There’s no point in keeping your home at a comfortable temperature while your home is empty. The thermostat can be easily increased to a warmer temperature once you and your family return home.

If your home is outfitted with a working fireplace, you should consider using it to heat your home a few nights out of the week. This will give your furnace a break and reduce your monthly energy usage simultaneously.
