Everyone loves to buy beautiful carpets because it adds beauty and aesthetics to the house. A downfall of carpet however is how it seems easy for them to collect dirt and stains. Cleaning carpets might seem to be a hectic work, especially if it’s a light colored carpet. If you are in a pinch, in this article we will discuss how to create a homemade dry carpet shampoo. This will help you quickly eliminate dirt, odors and some stains.

Why Homemade is a Better Option?

Using commercial shampoo for carpet cleaning can be a risky job especially when one has not tested it on the carpet material. Though various carpet shampoos are available in the market, depending on the carpet material, the basic ingredients that all commercial shampoos use can be found at home for a cheaper price. Instead of spending those extra bucks to buy a good shampoo, making it at home with guaranteed and tested results is a better option.

Ingredients Needed

There are three essential ingredients needed for making a homemade dry carpet shampoo.

Baking Soda

These three elements are considered to be powerful cleaning agents. Cornstarch and borax remove stains and dirt, while baking soda is known to remove odors from the carpet.  Along with the main agents, one can use other products to add a pleasant scent to the carpet.

Essential Oils

Bay Leaves

Rosemary, etc

Here is the appropriate amount of each ingredient to mix in order to make the dry carpet shampoo:

1 cup of cornstarch

1 cup of baking soda

1 cup of borax

1 tablespoon of herbs/essential oils/bay leaves, etc (as required for the scent)

Mix all the ingredients together, and sprinkle it on your carpet before vacuuming. Wait for a few minutes and then with a hard brush, rub the area to remove the stain and then vacuum the powder again. Afterwards, store it in an airtight jar or a box.

Bottom Line

Creating a homemade dry carpet shampoo will be able to help you remove dirt and odors from your carpet without doing a wet-cleaning method. This can help stains, such as from coffee, be removed from carpeting as well. Remember to brush the dry carpet shampoo into the carpet so it can get stubborn dirt stuck deep in the carpet fibers.
