Wood (and Wood Composite)
This is definitely one of the more aesthetic looking garage door materials and it definitely does come with a price. It’s one of the most expensive of all the materials we are going to be talking about. These doors do a great job at standing up to the elements no matter what climate you live in, but when it comes down to it they are going to need repair work every now and again also. They are customizable and can sometimes be found within a moderate price range, and wood composite is the cheaper option of the two that still has the same feeling of wood. You’re best off using this type of door if you have a really large two car garage or bigger.
Steel
A lot of the really best garage doors out there that are made of steel have galvanized steel at two different layers. When you compare these types of doors to wooden garage doors they are a lot less maintenance, but there are some doors that are prone to rusting and other types of decay. You’ll want a rather thick type of steel if you are going to go with this type of garage door, but they also come with a fiberglass overlay that helps with their overall resistance too.
Aluminum
Aluminum is undeniably the lightest in weight when it comes to all of the materials we are going to be talking about here, and this material is really great with all types of garage setups. A lot of the new models are really heavy and sturdy than in previous years, and they can tend to be dent-resistant too. Aluminum can sometimes be on the pricier end of things, but for the most part they are a really sound investment because they last so long and look great!
Fiberglass
In recent years fiberglass has become a very popular garage door material, and that’s because it can really help out with all of the other types of doors as well due to its mimicry abilities. You can have a fiberglass door that looks like wood or is transparent to let in a little bit of soft light to your garage. They are easily and cheaply customizable, and the only real downside to them is that they do have the potential to break over long periods of time, particularly in cold environments.
Vinyl
These are good for little kids and young drivers because they’re so sturdy and there’s just about nothing that will make them dent. In terms of the actual material it is pretty similar to fiberglass, but overall these doors are a lot more durable and long-lasting. The one downside to vinyl doors is that you don’t have as much customization options as you do with fiberglass.
