5 Cities Perfect for Young Homebuyers

Each city has its own distinct appeal, from San Francisco's sunny, inclusive communities to New York's bright, bustling nightlife. Young homebuyers should set aside time to review all of their available options, so they can make an informed decision best-suited for them. Naturally, money is a consideration.

Beyond cultural and social amenities, homebuyers should focus on areas within their price range. San Francisco and New York aren't always accessible, and though they're admittedly attractive, it's better to remain realistic. Fortunately, the United States is full of affordable cities which are just as amazing.

We'll detail five of those cities, exploring the country's best metros which exceed expectations — but not budgets.

1. San Antonio, Texas

Of all the states, Texas ranks at the top of the list for first-time homebuyers. San Antonio is especially appealing in terms of affordability and market volatility. In 2015, its value per square foot fell around $80.50, and there have been very few year-over-year declines in the home price index.

Home to the Alamo — a landmark of Texas history — homebuyers will appreciate the city's rich culture and appreciation for the past. It has many modern-day attractions which are just as interesting, with river cruises, botanical gardens, water parks and rodeos.

2. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Though San Antonio ranks first in Texas, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ranks first in the U.S. as the country's number one city for first-time homebuyers. Conventional mortgage loans are easily accessible, and more than that, the value per square foot rests at a comfortable $82.08.

As for attractions, Pittsburgh is full of interesting things to see and do for both individuals and families. The Andy Warhol Museum has the largest collection of Warhol art in the world, and with three professional sports teams — the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates — sports fans will feel right at home.

3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

New research from the American Enterprise Institute places Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the seventh most affordable metropolitan market in the country. Slow population growth in the city has kept housing costs reasonable, and with a median home price of $170,000, its accessible to most young homebuyers.

After finding a property and making the move, new residents will enjoy Milwaukee's brewing culture. Boasting the historic Pabst Mansion, those with interest in beer will never find themselves bored, but that isn't all. With performing arts centers, sports stadiums and hiking trails, everyone will find something they like.

4. Indianapolis, Indiana

The value per square foot is $70.58 in Indianapolis, Indiana, which makes it relatively affordable for first-time homebuyers. They'll also see the appeal in median annual housing costs of $9,833.42, and with a high income-to-housing costs ratio, this city is a premier destination for buyers on a budget.

Indianapolis is also a premier destination for motorsports enthusiasts, hosting the world-famous Indianapolis 500, as well as smaller events like the Red Bull Air Race. Homebuyers with other interests will still find much to see and do, with museums, theaters, ice rinks and city markets to explore.

5. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa, Oklahoma has sustained its reputation as one of the best cities in the country for first-time homebuyers, in part due to its high loan funding ratio at 74 percent. With market volatility at a low 2.4 percent, Oklahoma hopefuls can feel confident the area will remain stable as they settle down.

After settling, homebuyers will find a diverse range of attractions for both themselves and young children. Zoos and aquariums will keep curious minds satisfied, and adults will have a fantastic time at breweries and vineyards, golf courses, parks and performing arts centers which showcase world-class ballet and opera.

Reaching the Best Decision

Whether a homebuyer chooses Pittsburgh, Indianapolis or Milwaukee, they're making the best decision for their budget. More than that, they make the best decision for their future, moving to cities with amazing cultural and social amenities they'll enjoy for years to come.
