How to Remove Stains of Blood from Carpet

If it hasn’t happened to you in Ballarat City yet, it most possibly will, sometime. You will drip blood on to carpet, or you will notice someone else’s blood stains on your carpet.

Hopefully, you will notice this soon after it happens because like with most other stains, the longer blood stays on your carpet, the harder it is to remove it.

But, not to worry, Blood stains may be removed quite easily from carpet, if you know what you are doing.

First of all it is important to know what the stain is. I have seen carpet cleaners who barged into a house, sees red on the carpet, and without asking any question or attempt to identify the problem or identify the stain, start without delay to apply inorganic red-stain removal techniques. This is the ideal method for disaster.

Blood is mainly protein which is highly reactive, and is mostly sensitive to heat. At high temperatures it will bind chemically to the carpet material and may set in lastingly. In any case, it will become very hard to remove.

Since it is a protein, the best material to get rid of it will be an enzyme-based spotter with near neutral pH. There are many household cleaners with these conditions, but you should read the labels with awareness before trying to make use of any of them to get rid of blood stains.

Be very careful when handling blood that is from someone other than you. You will be risking infection from blood-borne diseases such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and HIV. Always wear appropriate protective gloves and wash your hands carefully with hot germicidal soapy water afterwards.

So, if you have fresh blood stains, first blot up as much as possible by dab the spot with a clean white cotton or paper towel. Try to avoid wipe the spot by rubbing sideways as this will only cause the stain to widen. Next wash out the stain with COLD water and then dry the spot carefully with a clean towel. Do again this step as many times as required. This should take care of fresh blood stains.

For older stains you will need to first scrape off any solid matter with a dull spatula or a spoon, and then wash out with cold water and dab with a dry towel to remove moisture. Most likely the mark will still be there at this point. At this moment, apply the COLD neutral enzyme spotter and leave it for about 15 minutes. Then wash out and dry.

If the stain is still there you may try wash out with a thin household ammonia solution. About 1 tsp of household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water should be enough. After about 10 minutes, spray the stain with clean water from a spray bottle and then blot it again to take away moisture. Then, spray it again and cover it with a clean towel and leave it to dry.

If this doesn’t get it all out, call a professional carpet cleaning Ballarat Company.
