Did you know that you can supplement your real-estate income by becoming a freelance proofreader? In this short article we discuss Transcript proofreading theory and practice and how you can make some extra money doing it!

What Is Freelance Proofreading?

A freelance proofreader is the final stage before an article or document is published. Proofreaders correct grammar, spelling mistakes, typos and punctuation. They do not tend to do any major restructuring of a document - this is the editors job.

Freelance proofreaders need a particular set of skills

People think that spell checkers have eliminated the need for a proofreader. You do not need any advanced Engilish degree to start proofreading for money. It does help to have a background in writing, publishing or editing but it is not required. Most freelance proofreaders have no formal qualifications!

What is really helpful is being detail orientated, hard working, great at marketing and the ability to be able to focus on your work. If you are excited about having these qualities then you are probably well suited for proofreading!

Proofreading Courses

If you are consdiering becoming a freelance proofreader then I highly recommend taking a course. Most of the people that take a proofreading course tend to be completely new to the proofreading industry and many often do extremely well! A good example is my friend that wrote this article about her experience with proofreading and the course called Transcript Proofreading Theory and Practice.

Here is a summary of some signs that might suggest you are destined to become a freelance proofreader!

- Have you spotted all my mistakes in this short article?

- Do you get mad at my mistakes and mistakes you find in other written documents?

- Do you want to work for yourself from home ?

If you answered no to these questions then perhaps proofreading might not be for you. But don't worry if you are not perfect and spelling etc. You can learn the basics from a course and learn how to spot all the most common errors that people make.

Working at home - what are the hours like?

You can work from home and have flexible work hours with freelance proofreading. But you will have deadlines for clients and that can get a bit stressful. You can just not take on many clients but if you take on a lot of them you will find yourself working day and night!

You can learn more about Caitlins Transcript Proofreading Theory and Practice course and her Proofread Anywhere course in her FREE WEBINAR.

This is the right investment for you if you are serious about becoming a freelance proofreader!.

Freelance Proofreading - how much money can you make?

Some of the top freelance proofreaders can make up to about $100 per hour. But this is not the norm! You will only make this kind of rate when you do technical work or when a client needs the work done ASAP. You are much more likely to make in the $20 per hour range. So in short you will not make a fortune as a proofreader, but you can make a decent living. Many people report making $30,000 to $50,000 freelance proofreading.

I hope that this gives you an idea for another way to make some extra money!
