Avoiding Work-At-Home Scams

Work-from-home jobs are extremely desirable for many people. When you consider that working from home means that you can stay in your pajamas and avoid a long commute to work, it is easy to see why people want a work at home job.

However, you have to be careful when you are looking for a work-at-home job to make sure you don't get caught up in a scam. If it is too good to be true then it probably isn't true.

Scammers are EVERYWHERE!

People that are looking for work-at-home jobs are often quite vulnerable. Often what we find is that people that are actively looking for a work at home job are doing so because they have fallen on hard times. Sometimes it is because they lost their job or a family member is sick.

Unfortunately, people will prey on the vulnerable. I have had experience with a con artist personally that pounced on my family in the weeks following a tragedy (my mom dying). We normally would not have fallen for his charms and promises but we did because we were emotionally vulnerable.

Often scammers will pose as employers that want you to work from home. This gives them authority to ask for your bank account details and social security number. This does not raise suspicions with most people because employers need to know these numbers!  When the scammers get your info they can steal your identity or con you into paying some fee in order to 'process your application'.

Here are a few of the things you should look for with a work from home job to avoid getting scammed.

1. Never send money to a company. Tell them that they can deduct any reasonable fee (hard to imagine that there is a fee with a job...) from your first pay check. Don't send them a dime, no matter how legit the reason sounds.

2. Ask yourself if the job sounds too good to be true. This is usually easy to spot. They will say things like 'earn 6-figures with no training and no degree required!'. I am not saying that this is not possible. But it is worth considering that an opportunity like this might be a scam. If you start your own freelance business (Best Ways to Earn Active and Passive Income Online) you can make 6-figures or more without the risk of being scammed by an 'employer'.

3. Double check that the company really is the company that they claim to be. Often these crooks will steal a companies brand to try and appear more legit. Be very careful that you know who you are talking to. You can check email addresses and URLs to make sure that they look legit. I have caught many scammers just by typing in their email to google and up pops a bunch of scam reports on the person.

Final Thoughts

My advice for people that want to work from home is to set up your own online business. This way your earning potential is unlimited and you will not be scammed by some online crook. If you need to make some extra money quickly while you grow your business there are a few ways to make a quick buck that are legitimate. Check out our article about making money from paid surveys (what are some survey sites that actually pay?).

Good luck out there!
