Different Types of Air Conditioning Compressors

Each air conditioning unit has a compressor. It plays a crucial role in compressing the refrigerant by increasing the temperature. The gas leaves the compressor when it is heated and goes into the condenser. The cooling process starts there. All the AC compressors have same type of job but the way they perform their job is different. So, there are different types of air conditioning compressors whose functioning process is different from one another but the end result is same. Here are the different types of compressors available in the market:

Different Types of Air Conditioning Compressors

It is important to know the different types of air conditioning compressors. From a screw AC compressor to a centrifugal compressor, knowing about your unit will help determine the maintenance and make the AC work better.

#1: Reciprocating Air Conditioner

The reciprocating compressor is one of the most popular types of the air conditioner compressor. In this type, a piston first compresses the air by moving up and down in the cylinder. When piston moves down, it actually creates a vacuum effect which sucks in the refrigerant. When it moves up, it compresses the gas in it and moves it into the condenser. This type of compressor is quite efficient and can be commonly found in air conditioning units.

#2: Scroll AC Compressor

The scroll air conditioning compressors are much newer in the market. The perfect example for scroll compressor is the LG compressor. They contain a fixed coil which is called the scroll. It is located at the center of the unit and there is one more coil which rotates around it. When the process starts, the second scroll pushes the refrigerant towards the center and then compresses it. These scroll compressors are getting more and more popularity that that of the reciprocating compressors. The best part is that they do not have any moving part and hence they are more reliable.

#3: Screw AC Compressor

The screw compressor is another type of air conditioning compressor which is extremely efficient and reliable. It is mainly used in large buildings that need a lot of air for continuous cooling. A screw AC compressor contains two large rotors that can move the air from one end to another. As a refrigerant moves through the compressor, the space starts getting smaller. Hence, it gets compressed.

#4: Rotary AC Compressor

Rotary compressors are quiet ones which are also smaller in size. They are very popular in locations where noise is a major concern. This AC compressor contains a shaft with many blades attached to it. This blade shaft rotates inside the graduated cylinder which consequently pushes the refrigerant through that cylinder. This helps in compressing the air.

#5: Centrifugal AC Compressor

As the name suggests, this type of AC compressor uses the centrifugal force that can pull in the refrigerant gas. Then starts spinning rapidly with an impeller for compressing it. This type of air conditioning compressor is used for the extra-large HVAC systems.

Final Words

So, these are the different types of air conditioning compressors that are used in Air Conditioning systems. Each of these compressors has different functionality and they are used in various types of air conditioning units. Though mechanism is different, all the types of compressors are efficient enough to work perfectly for cooling down a space.
