If you are wondering how an air conditioning system work, then you must know about its parts. There are 4 main parts of these air-conditioning systems. These are – throttling, compressor, evaporator and condenser. The most important role is played by the condenser among all these parts. The air passes through the condenser first and then the refrigerant gets condensed. Here we will cover the different AC condenser types.

AC Condenser Types - How They Cool Your Home

Just as there are different AC types, there are various AC condenser types that are used in the air conditioning systems. These are – air cooled, evaporative and water cooled.

#1: Air Cooled Condensers

Air cooled condensers are one of the most used ones in the market. It is used in smaller air conditioning units like window ACs and split ACs. The total quantity of the refrigerant passes through one cycle is also quite small. These air cooled condensers are also called the coil condensers. This is because they are mainly made up of either aluminium or copper coil. These air cooled condensers take up more space than that of the water-cooled condenser. There are 2 types of air cooled condensers – forced convection and natural convection. In the forced convection, a motor operated fan blows the air over the condenser coil. On the other hand, the air flows over naturally in the natural convection.

#2: Evaporative Condensers

The evaporative condensers are a combination of both air cooled and water cooled condensers. They are mainly used in the ice plants. In this case, the hot refrigerant will flow through the coils. The water is sprayed all over the coils. Simultaneously, the fan present there draws the air from the bottom of the condenser and then discharge it from the top side of the condenser. When the spray water comes in contact with condenser, it gets evaporated quickly. Then it gets absorbed from the condenser.

#3: Water Cooled Condenser

The third type of condenser is the water cooled condenser that is used in big packaged air-conditioners, large refrigerant plants and central air-conditioning plants. These are used mainly in the places where the load of cooling is very high. There is a large quantity of the refrigerant that flows through this type of condenser. There are 3 types of water cooled condensers available in the market – double pipe type (tube-in-tube), shell and tube type and shell and coil type. No matter what type of water cooled condenser it is , the water flows through one end of the piping for cooling the refrigerant and condensing it.

Conclusion

So, these are the three AC condenser types that are available and used in different types of AC units. Condensers are important because they take the gas from the compressor and liquify it for the evaporator. Though there are different types of condensers, the motive and aim of each of these are same. The only difference is the way they work or the technologies they use. The heat exchanger that is present in the condenser is often cooled down with the help of a fan which is blowing. It important to know the different parts in an AC unit, so you know how to maintain it. So, when you are buying an air conditioning system or unit next time, make sure to check the type of condenser it has.
