Mold Spots on Carpet - Prevent Them Like a Pro

Trying to get rid of mold spots on carpet? Be sure to properly prepare for the carpet cleaning, use an antifungal spray, repeat if necessary and prevent the chance of mold possibly coming back.

  • Preparation

As soon as the mold is discovered, proper preparation is needed right away. Not every type of mold is hazardous, but treat it as such. Put on a face mask and eye protection before trying to remove the mold. If possible, get the carpet out of the house. Not only does that possibly remove a health hazard, but it gives the area proper ventilation.

  • Initial Cleaning

Start out by treating any surface mold. Scrub the surface of the carpet so that some of the harder mold can come off and remove any dirt. Don’t use a vacuum, because mold spores can spread to other parts of the home later on.

If the carpet can come up, scrub the back as well. The backing might potentially have more growth as well, and if it is out of control, The carpet needs replaced.

  • Use an Antifungal Spray

Once it has been cleaned with a dry brush, it’s time to saturate the moldy area with an antifungal spray. These sprays work very well, as long as a person waits about an hour for it also again. Feel free to use the spray not only on the carpet, but any surrounding area possibly contaminated by the mold. The goal is to eliminate all visible mold once and for all.

After waiting an hour, blot the carpet dry with a rag. It’s not necessary to rinse the area with water. The spray continues to work until it is 100% dry, so there is no reason to speed up that process. Leave the carpet alone to dry fairly naturally for about 24 hours.

It’s important to leave the area of the carpet alone during that time. Block it off from not only humans, but pets as well.

  • Repeat if Necessary

Depending on the mold situation, repeat the antifungal spray process a few times. It can be a bit tedious at times, but most people will notice that doing it at least twice will help prevent further issues down the road.

  • Prevent the Chance of Mold Coming Back

There is no way to 100% avoid mold, but there are some tips to consider. Try to eliminate any areas that are prone to moisture as much as possible and protect your carpet accordingly. That means being smart with placing potted plants and wood near carpet. Also, make sure to thoroughly clean any pet accidents so they do not turn into a moldy situation.
