Stove Maintenance Tips

With regular cleaning and occasional repair, your stove should serve you and your family for decades. In particular, cleaning your stove properly will guarantee it works well every time you use it, and prevent grease fires and carbon monoxide emissions. Here are a few stove maintenance tips to help keep your kitchen stove in good shape.

Stove Maintenance Tips - Things to Keep in Mind

There are several tips to keep in mind for your stove-top appliance. Below is a list of maintenance tricks to help you keep your stove for a longer period of time.

Clean the Oven Window

Oven windows tend to accumulate dirt and grime. To clean the window, simply dip a damp cloth in baking soda and use it to rub the window. If the dirt is really baked on, wipe the window with ammonia, let it sit for about half an hour then scrape it off with a plastic ice scraper.

Prevent Boil-Overs

When cooking, use pans and pots that are deep enough to prevent splattering and boil overs. Minimizing spillage will help to prolong your stove’s useful life and reduce cleanup work.

Clean Spills Quickly

If you cook, then spills are inevitable. Fortunately, you can whisk away spills as soon as they occur and keep your stove spick and span. All you need is a paper towel or damp sponge but try to get it while it’s still warm. Make it a point to always wipe down your stovetop after each use to keep it clean, and you’ll also save yourself from scrubbing.

Use Some Elbow Grease

Of course, there are those instances when you won’t wipe up spills right away. If a spill has dried out and even cooked for a while, use a 50-50 solution of water and vinegar on a sponge along with a solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid. Waiting for longer will only force you to use more elbow grease. An all-purpose cleaner should suffice but don’t fall into the temptation of grabbing that can of abrasive powder and using it to scrub the oven. The powder will create tiny scratches on the surface.

Clean the Stove Parts Regularly

In addition to wiping down the oven after use, periodically clean some of the stove parts extensively. Wash the burner drip plates and other removable accessories either by running them in the dishwasher (only if the manual says they’re dishwasher safe) or by hand in the sink. You want to avoid the electric burner coils. Remove the control panel knobs and clean around their bases. Then wash the knobs in hot, soapy water and rinse and dry before replacing them.

Clean Under the Hood

If your stove doesn’t have a sealed cooktop, chances are food and grease will fall under the burners. It’s easy to forget about this kind of debris as it’s out of view, so make it a habit to lift the cooktop and clean beneath it. Consult the user manual for lifting the top without causing any damage. Then clean the grease buildup with a 50-50 solution of warm water and vinegar or a sponge and warm, soapy water. Finally, rinse with clean water and a sponge.

Bottom Line

With these stove maintenance tips, your stove should be spotless all year round. Once you know how to get rid of the dirt, be sure to clean your unit consistently. The tips above will help maintain your appliance, so you don't have to replace it.
