When you’re in a rush and headed out for the day, the last thing you want is a problem with your garage door. Hearing that horrible noise after pushing the button to open your garage causes an instant headache. There are many problems that can occur with garage doors as they are composed of many integral parts and accessories. If you’re garage door pulley broke, you’ll need to tackle this project as soon as possible.

Garage Door Pulley Broke

If your garage door pulley broke, you should first check if there a broken belt or chain and get them replaced if they are damaged.

How to Fix It

Garage doors are commonly belt or chain operated with a pulley system on either side of the garage door to bring the door up or down.

Homeowners should immediately know that there is a problem with their garage door system as soon as they open it. If there is any noise coming from the garage during operation that sounds like grinding, shaking or rattling, that is an indication that there is a problem in need of attention. Better to take care of it sooner before a larger (more expensive) problem arises.

Broken Belt or Chain

First check to see if there is a broken belt or chain. In this case, you can either replace them or call a specialist to come to your home and do a replacement and maybe some maintenance on the rest of the system as well. While you are checking around for broken parts of the belt or chain, also check to see if there are any screws or brackets that need to be tightened.

Cables Came Off Track

It is also a possibility that the cables have come off of the pulley or have become off track. This problem is usually caused by uneven pulleys on either side of the door. Some say that this repair is difficult, while there are many testimonies stating that it is an easy fix with very little steps. To put the pulley cable back on track, you will need some strength, as those chords are not easy to stretch and bring back onto the pulley. The majority would recommend to just call a specialist and have it done for you.

There are a plethora of things that can go wrong with the garage as they are made of a million different parts. Generally, if there is a problem with any of the elemental parts of a garage door system, this is an indication that there needs to be more basic maintenance done more frequently. Homeowners need to remember how important lubrication is for the garage system. Metal rubbing against metal causes friction that can turn into irreparable damages. You can easily lubricate the whole garage system with some spray WD-49 every 3-4 months to make sure it operates smoothly. Other than lubrication, it is important to make sure regular maintenance check ups are done by a professional annually.

Bottom Line

Avoid getting caught stuck in your garage on a busy or eventful day. Preventing this means you have to keep up with maintenance of your garage and follow proper garage door tips to avoid problems like the garage door pulley broke or something even worse. Remember, whenever you’re working with your garage, be sure to follow proper garage safety tips. Lubricate and have your whole operating system checked out by a professional annually if possible to get it serviced and repaired
