Types of Construction Methods

How many types of construction methods are there? There are five main methods, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. Without further ado, here are those methods.

Types of Construction Methods - Construction 101

Light Gauge Steel Construction

This method of construction is really convenient because constructing material is lightweight steel, which is easy to carry and provide high strength to weight ratio. In most cases, the light gauge steel is also coated in a powder which makes it rust-resistant. The only disadvantage of this rather popular construction method are that it requires unusual tools and that it is not great in high-temperature weathers, as steel can lose its durability in high heat.

Joisted Masonry Construction

This one requires bricks or blocks of concrete, which makes it very heavy and brittle. As a result, it is a risky method to use in areas which are prone to earthquakes, as it will crumble easily. On the other hand, this method is great because it requires commonly used materials, such as blocks of cinder or concrete, stone, and bricks. Because of those materials, this method is very cost-efficient and it can be one of the fastest methods to build walls.

Concrete Frame Construction

Concrete frame method calls for beams, slabs, and columns of concrete to produce a support structure for the building. The concrete used is usually reinforced, which makes it durable, but not against earthquakes. Furthermore, it is difficult for laborers to work with. One main advantage of this construction method is that concrete can be shaped into all imaginable forms, which makes it a good choice for unique building projects.

Wood Frame Construction

The oldest construction method there is. Wood is widely available, and timber is used to make joists, rafters, slabs, and plates required for construction. It is the most money efficient method because of the low price of wood. In addition, experienced workers can quickly build structures and tools needed for that are readily available. Unfortunately, this method has its own disadvantages. Wood is not durable against extreme weather conditions, and it is easily flammable.

If you are a construction worker, it is likely that you will be dealing with a lot of wood frame construction.

Steel Frame Construction

This construction method has a plethora of advantages. First of all, it is easily transported vertically with cranes, which makes it a perfect method to build tall buildings. Furthermore, it has one of the highest strength to weight ratios, which makes it support heavy loads without breaking. It is also one of the best construction methods in areas prone to earthquakes because steel is a flexible material. Finally, it can be quickly welded and assembled, which results in rapid construction. The disadvantages of steel frame construction are two. The first one is that steel loses its strength under high temperatures, and the second is that steel under high humidity can be prone to corrosion.

Summary

To summarize it briefly, there are five main types of construction methods. If you are managing a construction project, it is important to know the methods above. These are light steel gauge, joisted masonry, concrete frame, wood frame, and steel frame construction methods. It is important to understand the pros and cons of each method to know which one to choose for a certain construction project.
