4 Ways to Add Your Personality in a Previously Owned Home

Written by Posted On Monday, 19 August 2019 08:03

You bought a home, moved in, and are beginning to settle into it. As you settle in, you begin to wonder how you can make this home your own little oasis. Consider these 4 suggestions to make your new home yours:

Paint the Walls

Paint wields an unusual power in a home. It can make a small room feel large, make a cold space feel warm, or bring light into an otherwise dark hallway. However, different colors mean different things to people. For example, brown is depressing to some people, but cozy to others. Some people might think light green is inviting, but to some it is cold.

If you are unaware of your own color preferences, then take a moment and write them down. Determine what colors are warm, vibrant, intimate, and inviting. Determine your thoughts, then begin painting.

Re-finish the Floors

Another aspect of the home that commands attention are the floors. Though you may appreciate the current floors, they may not quite be you.

What is the color of the carpet? Would you prefer wood floors or carpet in the living room? What type and color of floors will your furniture match?

Take a simple inventory of the floors throughout the home and determine what you would change about them. Then, begin to make those changes.

Re-finish the Kitchen

The kitchen is an important room in the home. Every occupant, including guests, use it regularly.

There are certain focal points of the kitchen that draw attention. These focal points are often the appliances, cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes.

Take inventory of the condition of each of these focal points and decide, in order, what needs to change. If it is a long list, you might gather estimates from various home builders.

Add Curtains

An immediate and cheap way to add your personality to each room of the home is to install curtains. Usually with a few hundred dollars, you can order and install curtains for the main rooms of your home. When installed, they become a focal point in the room, often defining the atmosphere of the room.

Though not a comprehensive list, these four suggestions will set you well on your way to making that previously bought home your own. Decide which will make the biggest difference in your home and start there.
