How to Choose a Moving Company for House Relocation

Written by Posted On Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:22

Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences in life. With millions of moves every year, it's safe to say that most of them go smoothly with the help of a professional removalist. Removal companies can help with a number of things, including house, office, international, piano, and furniture removals, just to name a few. Hiring the right one is a must, of course. You get to minimise much of the stress associated with moving house and avoid scams. Here's how to pick a moving company:

1. Research Moving Companies

A simple Google search can find you multiple movers within your area. You can also seek recommendations from friends, co-workers, local area state agents, and family members. Check out multiple movers to see what types of services they offer, and at what cost, to ensure you're getting the best deal possible. Be sure to conduct due diligence to avoid scams.

2. Read Reviews

See what others have to say about a particular company by reading online reviews. Ensure you look at more than one review site. Some of the reputable review sites include Angie's List, Google, Better Business Bureau, and Also, look for more recent reviews that touch on the exact services you're looking for –whether local, long-distance or international moving services. This will better reflect the company's current services.

3. Get Written Estimates

You should end up with at least three companies to call for in-home estimates. Avoid companies that provide an estimate online or over the phone; it may be a sign of a scam. For a removal company to make an accurate quote, they must have all the necessary details of your move. This means sending a representative to your home to scope out the job. If you don't understand something on the estimate, ask beforehand. You can expect extra costs for delays, storage, transporting items down the stairs, or for heavy furniture removals.

4. Cost

Money is always at the centre of any business transaction. Several things will determine the cost of house relocation, including the number of goods being transported, distance, as well as other additional services such as packing. It's important to find a balance between quality services and price. Expensive movers aren't necessarily good movers!

5. Are They Licensed?

Some companies solicit removal businesses without the legal authority to do so. Consider using a company that has been accredited by reputable bodies such as BAR (British Association of Removers), BBB, AFRA (Australian Furniture Removers Association), and the Removals Industry Ombudsman Scheme. These organisations vet moving companies to ensure they meet the highest standards and maintain professionalism at all times.

6. Insurance

Moving is stressful enough without ending up with broken or lost items. The moving company is responsible for the safe and secure transportation of your items from point A to B. Go for a company with adequate insurance to cover loss or breakages. Check to see if you need to arrange for extra coverage, to ensure all your high-valued possessions are covered.

7. Services Offered

Removal companies offer a wide range of services, including packing, loading, transportation, storage, unloading, unpacking, and more. A good removalist should also provide boxes and other moving supplies on time. If you are simply looking to move furniture from one location to the next, ensure your furniture removalist can cope with the physical demands of the job.

8. Experience

Another great way to determine the trustworthiness of a removalist is to consider how long they've been in business. No one stays in business for long unless they offer quality services at affordable rates. Ask to see their track record as it will show you their ability to perform every time.

9. Find Experts

You don't want just anyone handling your precious possessions. Therefore, if you have speciality items like pianos, pool tables, highly-priced furniture, gym equipment, and the likes, find a company with experts who know how to handle them. For instance, furniture removalist would be more ideal for moving furniture from one location to the next. Most companies will list such information on their sites, but reviews can also be a good place to look.
