Different seasons come with different pests. Fall is fast approaching and pests such as rodents, roaches and beetles may move into your home to look for warmth and food. There are different pest prevention tips you can follow to keep your home clear of these unwanted tenants.

Pest Prevention Tips - Saving Your Home

Critters gain access to your house through holes in the roof, broken windows and garage doors. By fixing these pathways, you deny them free entry into your home and save yourself from the attendant damages.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is the best place for some pests to set up camp. Not only is it warm but it is also abundant in food supply. Cockroaches, mice and rats are the common pests found here. Cleaning work spaces and spills and storing food in containers with airtight lids are some of the ways you can keep pests at bay. You can also make sure that trash is taken out and litter trays emptied on a daily basis. In addition, all leaking pipes and damaged insulation should be fixed to prevent the pests from nesting inside the walls.

Garage

The garage is another perfect place for rodents to nest. Fixing damaged garage doors and any potential entryways is one step towards preventing pests from accessing your garage.  Set up shelves around the garage to avoid storing items on the floor. Store all your items in plastic containers so they won’t be chewed on. Regularly dust and clean your garage to check for nests and debris left behind by pests.

Attic

The attic is the next best place when it comes to harboring rodents and other pests. It is warm, dark and the numerous cardboard boxes, old clothes and books tucked away in there provide the best nesting materials. Getting rid of unwanted and unused items stored in the attic is a step towards preventing your home from being invaded by pests. Store any leftover items in plastic boxes, preferably with airtight lids. Regular cleaning of the attic also lets you get rid of any nests set up by the pests.

Bedroom

Bedbugs and cockroaches thrive in the bedroom. Vacuuming regularly and changing your bed linen as often as possible will keep the pests away.  Check for any signs of bedbugs on your pillow, mattress and bed frame and do not forget the carpet. Limit the number of wooden furniture in the bedroom and do not have them against the wall. Always close the doors and windows early to prevent pests from getting in.

Air vents and the roof

If you have a damaged roof, it is time to fix it. Damaged roofs provide access for pests to your home. These pests may find their way into the walls and cause more damage to your home. Air vents should be covered by mesh ventilation covers to block access into the house.

Following these pest prevention tips will keep your home free of pests. Do not forget to close doors and windows around the house and fix any broken or damaged entryways. Empty garbage cans regularly and keep them closed. Do not overfill them as they will attract pests.
