Roofing Material Options For Your Home

There was a time when homeowners had very limited options when it comes to roofing materials. Today, however, there is a wide range of roofing materials that you can consider for your home.

As long as you hire reputable contractors with roofing insurance coverage, you are guaranteed a great-looking roof that will protect you and your family from the elements for many years to come.

Let’s look at some of the roofing materials in the market today.

Metal roofing

Whatever the weather, you can be sure that a metal roof can withstand it. A metal roof can last for up to 75 years. Recyclable, non-combustible, and light, metal roofing is quite perfect for contemporary homes, bungalows, and cabins, and comes in a wide variety of styles, colors, and sizes.

Asphalt shingles

Its affordability is perhaps the primary reason asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material in the United States, with over 75% of American homes having asphalt roofs. Made from petroleum products, asphalt shingles are easy to install and durable, especially when reinforced with fiberglass or cellulose.

Clay and concrete tiles

Clay and concrete tiles are heavy, but they have many other things going for them. Aside from their durability, clay and concrete tiles are also fireproof, insect-proof, and eco-friendly because of the energy efficiency it provides when helping keep your home warm in the winter or cool in the summer.

Wood shingles or shakes

Obviously, wood shingles and shakes wouldn’t be an option if your house is located in a region where the climate is almost always wet. However, if you live in a place with a relatively dry climate, wood shingles or shakes made from cypress, western red cedar, redwood, and pine tree would be an excellent option. They lend an incredibly charming look to your roof and your house in general.

Slate

Slate tiles tend to be expensive, but since they have the potential to last for a hundred years or even longer, they are most definitely worth it. This fire-resistant and sustainable roofing material is perfect for homes in the Colonial or European style.

Fiber cement

Fiber cement composite tiles are made from a mixture of clay, concrete, and wood fiber. That makes them lighter than concrete tiles. Durable and resistant to fire, fiber cement tiles are available in various colors and textures.

Recycled rubber shingles

This may come as a surprise, but recycled rubber shingles are actually a very eco-friendly roofing material that you can go for. It’s water-resistant and durable enough to protect your home from bad weather and the debris that often comes with it.

Solar shingles

Solar shingles may look like asphalt shingles, but the similarity ends there. Solar shingles are named as such because they can generate up to 1 kilowatt of energy per 100 square feet. They may be thinner than regular solar panels, but solar shingles have proven to be capable of withstanding strong winds. As far as innovative roofing materials go, solar shingles take the cake with their durability, flexibility, and power-generating capability.

Green roof

The plants, trees, and vegetation that make up a green roof make it the most environment-friendly roofing material available. Aside from protection from the elements, a green roof can also improve air quality, reduce water runoff, and insulate homes. It can also become a potential wildlife sanctuary. If you want to build a green roof, then consider giving your house extra structural support. You will also need waterproofing, thermal insulation, water filtration, drainage, soil, and compost.

When shopping for roofing materials, always consider their pros and cons before settling on one.
