How to Repair Vinyl Windows by Yourself

Written by Posted On Friday, 11 October 2019 20:18

Since vinyl windows became popular, there has been an increase in the number of people requesting the services of professional window contractors to help them with the installation. This has both negative and positive effects on the availability of people who can genuinely do the job. Sometime you might have to wait in line for a more extended period than expected. How about trying to do it yourself following some steps?

Read along and learn. You might find it easier than you have been told by people around you or experts in the field.

First Step: Get the replacement parts

The situation of the glass will determine what you’ll be ordering to get it fixed. If the glass is in a broken state, you need to ensure you order some new glass panes. You should also be aware that it is not just about ordering the new glass panes. The panes have to be the same size as the one you have already, except you want to get frustrated in the process. Please, note the dimension on the existing pane before going out to buy new ones.

Second Step: Get rid of the outer sash

Something about the vinyl window is the fact that you can’t carry out any repair without first getting rid of the outer sash. It will prevent you from doing anything reasonable regarding the repair until you get it done.

Third Step: Glass panes replacement

Before you can get this done, you have to understand the glass panes. In the case of vinyl windows, it usually comes in the form of integrated glass units. If you are replacing the whole sliding pane, push the new one in until it locks perfectly. If you are only replacing the glass itself, you need to make sure you remove all the old traces of glass and sealant from the frames if you intend to make the process successful.

Once you have succeeded in pushing the new glass in, you need to ensure you seal the thin layer of silicone caulking around the edge to make the work perfect. Before the glass begins to dry, use a cloth dabbed in isopropyl alcohol to get rid of all stains from the glass.

Fourth Step: Jamb liner installation

This is important if the vinyl jamb liner is already damaged or when you need to fix a broken balance cartridge. To make the process easy, follow the procedure listed in step two. Once you are successful in getting the sliding panes off, snap out the damaged jamb liner using a utility knife. You can now replace the broken jamb liner with the new one you just got. Make sure they fit perfectly to avoid any future troubles coming from it. Get it screwed, and everything becomes perfect again. However, some designs might take extra caution and steps. An example of such is a balanced cartridge. Replacing it will require additional measures to prevent mistakes that could have terrible results.
