Gutters: How to Know When to Repair or Replace

Posted On Monday, 20 April 2020 11:16

Deciding whether to fix your gutters or replace them altogether can be a challenge for any homeowner.

It’s sensible to not want to spend a lot of money, so why not repair them? That’s a great idea, but if the damage has gone too far or if there’s an underlying issue, you’ll be dumping money into a lost cause.

Therefore, the question remains; “How do I know whether to repair or replace my gutters?” The main factor in determining whether to repair or replace your gutters will be the extent of the damage.

Continue reading to see some common gutter problems that can be repaired and some signs that mean that you may need new gutters.

Common Gutter Problems that can be Repaired

Gutter systems have fairly simplistic designs that can only fail in a few ways. However, it’s important that any problems that do arise aren’t ignored or they can progress to the point of needing a replacement.

Blockages

Gutters can become clogged from the buildup of dirt and debris, such as leaves and twigs. If you see water marks under your gutters or if water overflowing from your gutters, they may be clogged or the downspout could also be blocked. This type of problem is generally quick and easy to fix.

Sagging

If you notice that your gutters starting to sag or pull away from your house, you'll need to address this problem immediately to avoid needing a gutter replacement or expensive home repairs due to a collapse. Gutters can start sagging from something as simple as a broken hanger or gutter spike. If you find that this is the case, the hardware is easily replaceable and will save you on a replacement.

Small Leaks

If your gutters aren't clogged and you still notice that water is finding a way out other than the downspouts, you likely have a leak. Leaks can form at the seams of sectional gutters, which is quickly repaired by resealing it. Leaks may also develop as a result of a small crack due to corrosion or other damage to the gutter. Small cracks can be patched if caught quickly before they spread.

Improper Pitch

Gutters are installed with a gradual slope towards the downspout, usually around 1/8 or 1/16 inch per foot, to assist in moving the water. If your gutters have standing water when there is no clog, they may be improperly pitched. This can be the result of poor installation or of your house settling. This is a problem that can be hard to find but needs to be addressed quickly or it can lead to corrosion.

Signs that You Need to Replace Gutters

If multiple sections of your gutters are having the problems that we listed above or if you've repaired a problem before and it continues to come back, you should consider replacing your gutters.

Let’s take a look at some of the warning signs that you need to replace your gutters.

Large or Spreading Cracks

Though small cracks can be repaired, if left unchecked, they may spread and get larger quickly. If you ignore these cracks, they can damage the gutters, fascia boards, and the foundation of your house. Once cracks have spread, you should consider a replacement.

Peeling Paint On or Around Your Gutters

The paint on your gutters is made to resist weathering and normal wear and tear. If you notice that this paint is peeling, that means water isn't being properly moved by your gutters. This can be an indication that your gutter has cracks or other damage that can necessitate a replacement.

Pooling Water Around Your Foundation

If you see water pooling near the foundation of your house, it means that your gutters aren't functioning properly. This can be the result of a simple blockage, but can also mean that there is a defect in your gutter system. It's important to find the cause of this quickly because pooling water can damage your foundation and lead to costly repairs. If the underlying issue is more serious than a clog, you need to replace your gutters.

Gutters Pulling Away From the Home

The easiest way to know that your gutters may need replacing is if they're sagging or pulling away from the house. This means that they are full of water and failing due to weight. This can be the result of the gutters not being appropriate for the home, improper draining, or excessive debris. These can all necessitate a replacement.

Final Thoughts

A lot of issues with gutters can be repaired if they’re caught quickly and addressed appropriately. However, when problems are ignored, they result in needing a replacement. Keep an eye out for these signs and you’ll be fine!
