What are the four types of roofs?

When choosing a design for your new roof, it’s important that you look at all your options so that you get exactly what you want.

Gable

A gable roof is a roof that is peaked or has a high pitch. It is one of the most popular roof styles in the United States. Gable roofs are known by their iconic triangular shape. Because of their high pitch, they easily slick away water and snow, protecting your roof from the elements and preventing moisture accumulation. The vaulted ceilings that result from the high pitch allow you to set up an attic. There are a few types of gable roofs:

• Side
• Front
• Crossed
• Dutch style

Mansard

Also known as a French roof, a mansard roof has a four-sided design where slopes stem from the middle, and the lower slope is interrupted with windows. This style was used in the mid-1500s in Italy and England. 17th-century architect François Mansart designed Parisian townhouses and chateaus using this style.

Gambrel

Gambrel roofs are similar to mansard-style roofs, but they have two sides rather than four sides. You may be familiar with seeing this style used on farmhouses or Georgian architecture.

Hip

Hip roofs are those that slope upward from all sides and have no vertical ends. They are also known as “pavilion roofs” and have a pyramidal shape to them. This style is commonly seen on bungalows and cottages.

Common Roofing Materials

Now that you know more about styles, it’s important to think about what materials will be used to build your roof. A licensed and experienced roofer with a high customer satisfaction rating can go over what materials will work best for your roof to give you the energy savings that you want but is also within your budget.

Shingles

The dominant material for residential roofing is asphalt shingles. However, there are other types of shingles including slate, ceramic, tile, and even wood. Installing shingles is a much less expensive alternative to metal roofing, which can be very expensive.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs last two or three times longer than other types of roofing materials. Metal roofs are able to withstand the elements a lot better and for much longer than an asphalt roof. Impervious to rain or snow, metal roofs are slick, and the dark colors absorb heat, which melts snow and prevents it from accumulating. These two features of metal roofs’ physical design is why they are top choices for people who live in areas with a lot of snowfall.

They are noisier than other roof types when it is raining, sleeting, or hailing outside. However, your roofer can also install sound deadening insulation or solid plywood sheathing to reduce the noise.

Metal roofs are quicker and easier to install than shingles. Metal roofs come in large sheets, or panels, that are anywhere from 1 to 3 feet wide. A roofer can install your metal roof in 1 to 2 days because they do not have to be laid out individually like shingles.
