The quality of your painting finish can either make or break a space and if you’ve decided to get a professional to take care of your next project it’s a good idea to ask them some questions before hiring them to ensure that you are not only getting a quality result but that you are getting the best value for money. Reputable painters should have no hesitation in answering your questions if they do it's in your best interest to find someone who will. Here is what you should be asking your painter.

How much experience do you have?

It's always a good idea to source a painter that has extensive experience painting on different surfaces and environments. They’ll know exactly what products will work best to give you the highest quality finish. Ask the painter if they have any examples of similar work they can show you. If the painter doesn’t have a lot of experience that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t do a satisfactory job, although you should ask them if they have any references.

How long will it take, and do I have to be home?

When talking with the painter ask them how long it will take to complete the job and if they will do it over consecutive days/weeks or come at various times to do it. Having painters coming in and out at random times can be a huge inconvenience so ensure that they will complete the job in one go rather than doing it in dribs and drabs. Additionally, ask them if you have to be home whilst they are there painting, some people might want to be there whereas others will have other commitments and can't sit around waiting for the painters to finish their work.

How do you prepare the surface before painting and how many coats of paint will be applied?

Preparing the surface before painting is essential to make sure that the paint adheres correctly and doesn't bubble or flake off. Proper preparation will ensure adequate durability of your paint. It's also important to ask the painter how many coats of paint they will use to get the desired result.

Are you licenced?

Licencing requirements for domestic and commercial painting in Australia can vary depending on which state or territory you live in. Here in Queensland, projects over $3,300 must be completed by a licenced painter.

Are you insured?

The painter you choose must be insured. If damage is sustained to your property whilst the painting project is been undertaken and the company or painter is not insured, you will be out of pocket for the damages. Additionally, when using an uninsured painter you run the risk of them holding you liable if they get injured whilst working, it may be tempting to go with someone uninsured to save money but it’s simply not worth the risk. Ask them to see a copy of their current insurance.

What’s included in the quote?

You should ask the painter for a fixed price quote that is not subject to change and it should include a breakdown of costs, including paint, labour, and extra materials.

What precautions do you take to prevent my belongings/furniture/floor from getting paint on them?

The last thing you want is to have a beautiful finish on your house, but your floor, furniture or belongings have paint splatters on them. Ask the painter if they will move or cover your furniture and what measures they will take to protect your property. Quality painting professionals take the necessary precautions and have the protection readily available.

Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on your work?

Reputable painters are confident in the quality of their work and will usually offer a warranty or guarantee with their projects. This not only provides you with peace of mind if any issues were to arrive down the track you but its also a good indication the company will do a satisfactory job.

What painting services do you provide?

The painter you choose must have experience in various painting techniques to ensure you don’t have to hire two separate professionals to complete the job.

What paint brands do you use?

The painter must use quality paints for their work. Inferior quality paints usually don’t have the longevity that good quality ones do. Whilst painters that use cheap paints may cost less to hire, it can end up costing you more recoat and fix poor quality paint.

What safety measures do you take?

For most people, asking about safety measures isn’t one of the first things that comes to mind, but it is a vitally important question. Older houses were typically painted using lead paint and if this is the case you should discuss with your painter when getting your quote, they will need to have the proper skills and equipment to be able to remove it adequately without causing harm to you or your family.

When can they fit you in?

If you want to get your painting project done in the coming weeks or months you may want to start researching as soon as conveniently possible. Many quality painters book out weeks in advanced so if you know when you want your painting job completed by book in early. In the busier months in the lead up to Christmas, some companies may turn down small jobs as they are too busy.

Here at MDC Specialists, we specialise in painting, decorating and mould removal services and would love the opportunity to discuss your project with you.
