Bathroom Renovation 101: A Design Guide

We all need a place to call home. Somewhere to come home to at the end of a long day. Home is where we put our feet up, relax and unwind and enjoy the time of our dear family.

Yet not every home comes complete and ready to enjoy. Many folks buy older houses that need a bit of tender loving care. Whether it’s the kitchen, the floors, the paint job or the bathroom - sometimes older homes need some work to make them truly enjoyable.

In this useful article, we’re going to go through bathroom renovations 101 and learn a few design tips to make your brand new bathroom as stunning as it can be.

Seek Inspiration

Before you go buying bathroom supplies and getting ready to renovate, it’s worth seeking some inspiration for your renovation. The internet is a great place to get inspired. Read some bathroom design blogs, and learn about the latest trends. Browse Pinterest for clever bathroom design hacks and tips. Ask friends and family who’ve recently completed a renovation of their own.

As you get inspired, make lists and notes. Sooner or later, the shape and form of your new bathroom will emerge in your head. With the right designer and builder, this can then become a reality.

Choose a Colour Palette

At some point during the process, you’re going to have to decide on a colour palette. The main things to consider are your tiles, your paint colour and your fittings (like taps and showerheads).

For instance, you could opt for a pure white palette, with a mixture of matte and gloss white for your paint and tiles. This could be contrasted with matte black taps and fittings.

Another idea is to go for some cool, soft greys in your tiles, contrasted with a light blue paint job. This could get complemented with shining chrome tapware and shower fittings.

Choose Your Tiles

Tiles play a large part in a bathroom’s aesthetic. They are often the most prominent feature, as they tend to cover a large area of your wall and floor space. As such, you need to pick tiling that will make an impact and stand out. There are a massive variety of tiles available, so take your time and pick something that you’ll be happy with for the long term. Don’t rush the decision.

Windows and Window Dressings

Next up you need to consider your windows. Will you choose frosted glass or another type? Privacy is an issue here, so if your bathroom gets exposed to anyone else’s windows or yard, you will most likely want a frosted glass. This will still let in natural light and you can open a window for some fresh air, but the last thing you want is to feel as though someone can see you while you’re in the bathroom.

Once you’ve decided on a type of window, you need to choose appropriate window dressings. Fabric isn’t a great idea here, due to the amount of moisture that occurs in a bathroom due to showers, baths and running taps.

A good idea for window dressings that is simple yet elegant is plantation shutters. Again, wood is not the best idea due to the moisture levels, unless it’s specifically treated to be moisture-resistant. You might be better with a synthetic material here.

A Cool Conclusion

Well, there you have it. Seek inspiration online and elsewhere, and pick a colour palette to start with as this will inform the mood of your bathroom. Take some time to pick the right tiles for the renovation, and carefully consider your choice of windows and window dressings.
