Let’s be honest, just thinking about moving can be stressful. From having to pack up a home and all its memories to deciding where to plant your roots next, executing a moving plan can be as demanding as a full-time job. For anyone about to undertake a lifestyle move, don’t get overwhelmed just yet because these tips can help make moving a whole lot less stressful.

Now take a deep breath and let’s get started!

Tip #1: Make a Detailed Moving Schedule

When it comes to the different ways to approach moving, going with the flow should be avoided at all costs. Afterall, how can anything go smoothly without a plan of attack that details what needs to get done. Before digital diving in to all the moving tips a quick internet search has to offer, start by making a thorough moving schedule that addresses your specific needs.

In other words, schedule out your move to work with the amount of time you think will be required to accomplish all aspects of moving from start to finish. For example, a 3-month moving schedule can be broken down as follows:

• 3 Months before anticipated move - find and secure new place to live
• 2 Months before anticipated move - decide on necessary moving services (real estate agent, movers and moving truck rental, cleaning service) and begin requesting quotes
• 1 ½ Months before anticipated move – have all necessary services booked and start packing

The main idea is to help prevent stress from the start by creating a realistic time frame for yourself to be able to take on each element of the move.

Tip #2: Take the Staging Process Seriously

Once your move is underway, in general, staging your home to sell is important for two main reasons. First, a staged home is more likely to draw in buyers and help them to better envision themselves living in that space. Second, staging your home is the best time to get your first big round of packing done. Afterall, the goal of a staged home is to have all clutter and most personal items packed out of sight.

Whether you plan to use a real estate agent or are looking to sell independently, some common staging suggestions to follow include:

• Clean until every nook and cranny is spotless
• Reposition furniture in each room to create the most spacious layout
• Keep décor to a minimum

Since the goal of staging is to make your home look as stunning and spacious possible, really take advantage of how much packing you can get done during this time. That means packing anything and everything you won’t need until you move into your new place.

Tip #3: Consider External Storage Options

As you’re taking on your first round of packing to get your home ready to be staged, there’s a good chance you’ll have a lot of boxes and belongings that are starting to pile up. To prevent overcrowding storage space in the home with everything that’s been packed, keep those areas clear for potential buyers to get a proper view by putting those belongings in a local storage rental.

Keep everything that you worked hard packing out of sight and out of mind until you move into your new place by taking advantage of self storage units in College Station. Not to mention, renting a storage unit is a great way to ensure peace of mind that your belongings are safe while potential buyers are touring the home.

One thing is for sure, stress doesn’t stand a chance against getting a big pack done and safely stored!

Tip #4: Organize the Packing Supplies and Create a Procedure

Probably one of the most helpful tips to make packing for a move as stress free as can be is to organize everything from the supplies to the procedure. Start by getting together all the packing supplies that will be needed, for example:

• Boxes (calculate how many will be needed and what sizes)
• Bubble wrap or wrapping paper
• Heavy duty tape
• Labels
• Permanent markers
• Masking tape (get a different color for each floor of the house)

The idea behind using a different color masking tape for each floor, or area, of the new home is so you can make sure boxes are put into the correct areas when being moved into your new place. For instance, use red masking tape to make a large X on all boxes that will be going into the basement at the new home, and use blue masking tape to make a large X on all boxes that will be going upstairs in the new place.

Now get ready to use these tips to save yourself from a lot of headaches and help make moving less stressful from start to finish!
