5 Signs Your Business Needs A Larger Office

Posted On Saturday, 20 March 2021 21:19

Is your business growing? Are staff that have been working remotely hankering to come back to the office? Is equipment being lost under mountains of unfiled paperwork? If so, you’re going to need a bigger office.

Here are five signs that it’s time to upsize your workspace:

1. Not enough desks

A pretty simple one to begin with: If you have more staff than desk space, then it’s definitely time to find a bigger office. Even if staff are happily hot-desking, desk-sharing, and doing some hours remotely, as a minimum you should have sufficient desk space to have everyone in the office at any one time.

Cramped working conditions can have a negative effect on staff well-being and affect productivity, so having ample desk space should be a priority for all business owners.

2. No meeting areas

If you invite clients and customers to your premises, then it’s vital that you have designated meeting areas. You might just about get away with taking them to a local coffee shop every now and then, but this is no sort of long-term solution and can look unprofessional if it becomes the norm. Having them perch on the end of an already cramped desk area is a definite no-no.

Even if you don’t entertain anyone from outside the business, having breakout areas where staff can collaborate away from the confines of their desks can work wonders for productivity.

3. You need more staff

If your business is expanding, and you’re looking to take on more staff, then it’s high time to consider a new office space. Even if your current surroundings have ample room for a few new recruits, think about the rate at which you’re expanding and think how things will look like in two or three years’ time. If things are on the up, moving to a spacious new workplace can help you recruit the best new talent and keep hold of your existing high flyers.

4. You want to improve your image

It might sound superficial, but the office you work at says a lot about your business. Relocating to a bigger and better workspace can tell people your business is on the up and help to bring in new clients or persuade people from other companies to come and join yours.

Choosing an office space in a great location, with interesting views from windows in meeting rooms and breakout areas can also be a plus point. Riverside spaces, such as the offices in Manbre Wharf, combine city-centre locations with great waterfront views - a great combination for any business that is on the up.

5. Unhappy Employees

If you’ve so far managed to put off a move, even in light of the mounting evidence above, having your staff complain should be the final straw for any business owner. If staff are unhappy because of overcrowding, they might complain to you directly or you may overhear the disquiet in conversations between employees. It might even manifest itself in a dip in productivity or staff turning in late, so look out for all the signs of unhappiness. In any case, if your staff are unhappy about the size of the office, you need to consider your options as a priority or risk losing them to a competitor.
