Humans have evolved extensively over the years, from food, clothing and shelter; our needs and necessities have grown tenfold. Today we need social skills, economic balance and much more. Our survival instincts have led us to learn and use these skills as and when required. One such skill that has become the need of the time is negotiation. But how do you make use of this skill? Now it’s common knowledge that you don’t necessarily go around negotiating with every Tom, Dick and Harry. What you do is that you come along the way, you strike this skill only with a person equally interested, but once again, the question remains how? Well, it's very easy, provided you have the answers. Let’s scroll down this article to learn about using the art of negotiation without spending too much of your energy.

1. A Win-Win Situation

No one, not even a monkey, would think about giving back your cap until you give him something in return. As humans, we believe in the concept of benefit, and where there is no benefit, that situation or event automatically becomes boring for us.  To make sure that the opposite person remains interested in your negotiation, let them know what’s in it for them. That should help. To learn more about it and practice it without any failures, you can use websites like Karrass to understand negotiation exercises because there can be so many! It’s all about a win-win situation, and the ball is in your court. What are you going to do with it?

2. Strangers, Who?

Avoid strangers, and don’t talk to them! Isn’t that what we all have learnt growing up? Not when you want to strike a benefitting deal with people. It is very important to understand the significance of building a relationship with the opposite person. A relationship brings along trust; it gives the person something to rely on, which is absent when you two are simply strangers. It’s also your responsibility to break the ice and develop a bond. Instead of just getting to the job, developing a relationship and actually finding out since when have they  been at this job can make a major difference.

3. Sincerity Goes A Long Way

Good, bad or worse, say it and get done with it instead of beating around the bush. No one would like even to hold a conversation, leave aside negotiate with someone who lacks sincerity. Like Eva Heller said, ‘Don’t claim you are sincere, just be it!’ Rings true, doesn’t it? So, no, you don’t need to go to extreme lengths to convince or beg. For that matter, add a few handsome pinches of sincerity to your negotiation and see the wonder it works. Everyone understands, respects and values sincerity when it’s firm.

4. Agreement, Really?

Just because two people are talking about benefits and winning situations, it does not imply that they are aiming at striking an agreement. Even using the word agreement can cause discomfort and ruin the plan, so it is better to avoid using the term altogether. Negotiation is all about a conclusion that is equally acceptable for both parties. Contrary to agreement, there is give and take, which makes negotiation more suitable. So, no more agreements and much talks.

Conclusion

Now that we know how to use negotiation let’s use it more often to make our lives more simple and less stressful. Also, it is important to ensure not to rub off the wrong people. Suppose someone isn’t willing to negotiate to walk off, then get into an ugly argument. Another advice would be to give the other person some space to think rather than push them constantly and put them on edge. You don’t want to be overbearing and irritating. That would simply go against negotiation as it implies both the parties aren’t willing. Don’t complicate. Go with the flow and our how’s and see the magic unfold.

Let us know how you plan to use the art of negotiation.
