7 Tips To Keep Your Kitchen Clean And Safe

Posted On Monday, 24 May 2021 20:54

Keeping your kitchen clean and safe is very important because it’s where you prepare, cook, and eat your meals. However, for some homeowners, keeping this one of the messiest and busiest areas in the house can be very overwhelming.

So, to ensure your home will look better and maintain a good quality of health, here’s a compilation of tips on how to keep the kitchen clean and safe.

1. Wipe Spills Before They Stain

Before they stain or become a sticky mess, clean up spills immediately using a cloth. Always keep the cloth in drawers or paper towels on your counter so that you can easily grab it if there is a spill.

For bulk mess, wipe it with a paper towel and then dip a cloth in warm soapy water and then wipe it through your counter thus it is not greasy or sticky.

Removing such messes right away will stop them from becoming thicker or hardening. This, in turn, will prevent pests from gathering in the kitchen. Please note that when pests land on the food you’re preparing, they may leave bacteria that is bad for the health of whoever eats it.

2. Clear Your Counters

If you’re stacking knives, pots, and dishes, then you’re losing out on lots of space in your kitchen. In addition, these could collapse over and result in accidents. As you prepare and cook food, make sure to clear your countertop. After cooking, wipe the surface with a piece of cloth soaked in warm soapy water, though you can always use a multipurpose kitchen cleaner that has bleach.

However, if you don’t like wiping up crumbs using a cloth, get a dustpan and small brush or a small vacuum. If you’re planning to buy a vacuum cleaner you may look for them on Comfy Dwellings and other similar sites. On this site, you’ll be able to find comprehensive buying guides that can help you choose the best vacuum and other products that you can use at home.

Nevertheless, for your stuff not to take up too much space on your counters, store them on cabinets.

3. Don’t Overload Your Refrigerator

Putting a lot of food and other items inside your refrigerator isn’t actually a good idea. It’s because it’ll prevent the circulation of cold air that keeps food cold and reduces the development of bacteria.

4. Clean Sponge Every Day

Unluckily, the sponge or kitchen cloth you’re using throughout the day can grow bacteria very rapidly. To prevent this from happening, boil your sponge in water for at least five minutes to kill bacteria. Or you can use a new cloth every single day.

You can also place your wet sponge inside the microwave and heat it for a minute in order to sanitize it. However, make sure to control your microwave’s heat for it may burn the sponge instead.

5. Use Separate Chopping Boards For Meat

In case you didn’t know, cross-contamination is the transmission of bacteria and germs from a surface to food. In the kitchen, cross-contamination is more likely to happen from raw meat to a vegetable especially when you use the same board without cleaning it.

To keep your kitchen clean and most importantly, safe, assign a separate cutting board for seafood or meat, and wash your knife, board, and hands after handling uncooked meat.

On the other hand, when you notice your cutting boards have deep grooves that are difficult to clean, then replace them right away.

6. Defrost

Meat as well as other frozen items should be defrosted in the microwave or refrigerator. However, when you’re defrosting food items in the refrigerator make sure to place them on the bottom shelf so that the juices do not drip on other foods. Also, if the items have been microwaved already, make sure to cook them right away.

7. Store Knives Off the Counter

To prevent an accidental cut, don’t leave your knives lying on the counter. You shouldn’t also store them in drawers. Instead, hang your knives on magnetic strips on the wall. or stick them in your counter’s block.

But if the only storage option you have is a drawer, you can slide plastic knife guards on the knives before putting them away. Place them in a drawer together with other sharp items such as peelers and scissors. In that way, you are aware of where sharp items are kept.

Conclusion

Hopefully, the above-mentioned tips help you to learn more about how to keep your kitchen safe and clean. Start implementing as well as adapt them into your day-to-day routine to ensure that your kitchen is safe and looks great at all times. Also, a clean and safe kitchen may help in improving the value of your property which is beneficial if you’re planning to sell it.
