The best home renovations to add value to your home

Over the past year, increased time at home has led to a DIY boom as homeowners turn their hand to home improvements and learn new skills.

If you’re looking to renovate your home, we’ve put together some of the best home improvements you can do in your home to add value without having to spend the earth.

Small home improvements can make a big difference to how potential buyers view your home. So grab your toolbox and get ready for some DIY!

Spruce up the kitchen

A kitchen makeover is rumoured to add 6% to your home value, so it’s no wonder many homeowners are doing up their kitchen before selling. Whilst the average kitchen can be costly to fit, there are numerous ways to renovate what you already have. If you’re on a tight budget, consider painting your surfaces or cupboards, replacing handles and having a good sort out to minimise clutter.

You can also get good quality vinyl wrap which can be used on your kitchen cupboards and surfaces to give your kitchen a facelift - without the need for a full refit.

If you're planning on doing this yourself, you're going to want to ensure your measurements are accurate which is when a paint pen is a great option as it can be used on numerous surfaces and materials which allows you to mark points you need to go to.

Cellar to loft conversion

If you’ve got an attic or loft, chances are it’s a wasted space. By transforming a redundant loft into an attic conversion you could add a whopping 15% onto your house price.

Although you’ll probably need professionals in for this one (and building control!), you can do some of it yourself. Painting, decorating and even laying a new floor are relatively simple DIY tasks that can really boost your house price.

Upgrade the garden

A tidy, well-kept garden goes a lot further than you’d think. A patchy lawn and unkempt shrub may be holding your house price back, so if you take some time to keep your garden in check, you could increase your house price by around 5%.

Upgrade your central heating

If your central heating is a little old (15 years or older), it could be worth paying for it to be upgraded. If you want to really boost your house price, consider a smart heating system so you can heat your home from your mobile – fancy!

Whilst it can be daunting undertaking home improvement projects, there are plenty of renovations you can do yourself that won’t cost the earth. Although a full kitchen re-fit and loft conversion may be expensive, if you can afford to, it can be a brilliant way to add value to your home.
