Basic Landscaping Tools Every Gardener Should Have

Modern stores offer such a rich assortment of gardening and landscaping equipment that beginners might find it challenging to find the right products. In this article, you'll find reviews of basic tools that any gardener should have, from a shovel and landscaping rake to a saw and wheelbarrow. With time and experience, you can expand this list.

How to Choose Tools

It's worth making a list to buy only the items you need and not take too much. In general, all instruments can be roughly divided into three main groups:

• Hand tools. They include everything powered by hand, that is, shovels, rakes, hoes, pruners, etc.
• Power tools. A motor powers these devices. Some tasks are too tedious to do with hand instruments.
• Protective equipment. Gardening and backyard work can be traumatic, especially if you use powerful gas devices. You cannot do without protective equipment.

Most likely, you already have a rough plan of what and where exactly you will plant on your site. The choice of suitable equipment depends on the specifics of the tasks. If you are going to have a lawn and a couple of small flower beds, you won't need a lot of equipment. In case you plan to grow vegetables, berries, and fruits, your set of devices will be much longer. Based on your scheduled tasks, choose the tools you need from the three categories listed above.

Hand Tools

Although progress has made great strides forward, some essential hand tools are indispensable for now. Shovels are in the first place on the list of such products. They can be of different shapes and sizes, but the main subspecies are round and square point ones. The first is used to work with loose materials; the second is better at digging holes for planting.

Other tools of necessity are rakes. Among them, it is also worth highlighting two main types: landscape and leaf ones. They are made of different materials and have various shapes. Landscape rakes are designed for such work with the soil as leveling and loosening. Leaf ones are suitable for picking up small, lightweight debris.

For cutting shrubs and small tree branches, you need sharp pruning shears. It is not recommended to prune plants with scissors or a knife. Among other hand tools, you can also get:

• Hoe;
• Trowel;
• Pitchfork;
• Hand saw;
• Weed remover;
• Hand cultivator.

Power Tools

In this category, the list of required instruments is smaller. Power tools can be costly and, therefore, are better rented than purchased for occasional tasks. However, to maintain a neat and healthy lawn, you need a lawnmower. Some models are equipped with a mulcher and collecting bag, which makes the work much easier. You can also pick up fallen leaves in autumn with a rake, but this process will be faster with a leaf blower.

Also, if there are a lot of bushes and trees on your site, you might need a classic chainsaw or pole chainsaw, which is more convenient for cutting thick branches. Of course, you can do it with a regular handsaw, but it will take a lot of time, and not everyone has enough strength to do it. Therefore, power devices are the best choice for such tasks. Also, if you have a large backyard, then you should also get a power lawn aerator.

Protective Equipment

Needless to say, hard work in the garden can cause calluses on your hands. That is why you should definitely buy several pairs of quality gloves. Since this type of activity takes place outdoors, you can get sunstroke or heatstroke. Choose suitable clothing that covers your body, and always wear a hat. Also, to work safely with power tools, you might need:

• Ear protection;
• Glasses;
• Respirator;
• Knee pads;
• Boots with a reinforced toe.

Other Useful Items

For many tasks, you might need different-sized buckets, as well as a wheelbarrow to make it easy to carry all the tools to the worksite. Besides, you should stock up on a set of watering cans and hoses of different lengths. The various nets and markers are optional but make gardening much easier.

Best Tools to Keep Your Yard Neat

The choice of all other tools entirely depends on the characteristics of the garden and your landscaping plans. In the work process, you will be able to more accurately understand which other instruments you need to buy and which you practically do not use, and you can get rid of them. Also, do not forget to regularly update your equipment to get the desired results working with them.
