7 Great Tips For Hanging Custom Made Curtains

A well-appointed window treatment can completely transform a common and boring window into a dramatic feature of the room. As such, custom made curtains are becoming a highly popular choice for many homeowners. In this article, we have shared 7 of our greatest tips for hanging these curtains in your home and ensuring that they look fantastic.

  1. Hang the curtains high
Hanging a window treatment high can give the illusion of height. The pole or valance should be hung a minimum of 4 inches and a maximum of 12 inches above the top of the window (in most cases). When this tip is ignored and the pole or valance is hung or just above the woodwork, the result is unprofessional and cheap.
  2. Use a shade to create an illusion of height
Another trick to make the window look tall is to hang the pole at least 12 inches above the frame and hang a bamboo or roman shade underneath it. By combining the two treatments, you can hang the panels high without a large space of blank wall showing throw. As the shade is covering the space, height is alluded to.
  3. Extend the rod beyond the width of the window
A mistake that is commonly made when hanging a curtain is to choose a rod that is the exact width of the window. The rod should always extend at least 3 inches beyond the frame on either side. This gives the illusion that the window is large, lets in more light when the drapes are open and is more visually appealing.
  4. Press or steam the curtain
It’s amazing how many people simply remove the treatment from the packaging and hang it straight away. They theorize that any wrinkles will “fall out” with time – but they usually don’t. This is why it’s important that you press or steam the drapes prior to hanging them, as this will ensure that all folds or wrinkles are removed.
  5. Leave room underneath for cleaning
For free hanging custom made curtains, the proper length is about half an inch above the floor. This gap at the bottom ensures that mopping and cleaning can take place without soaking the fabric or getting in caught in the vacuum cleaner. As the gap is so small, it will also give the illusion that the drapes touch the floor.
  6. Adjust the length with creative hem finishes
There are a number of different hem finishes to choose from, each of which will give the curtains a slightly different look. A popular hem for silk and lined drapes is called a trouser kick, whereas a puddle finish is suitable for all fabric types. For an easy and inexpensive finish, a bishop’s sleeve is recommended.
  7. Use a tension rod if you can’t hang a curtain one
In cases where you aren’t allowed to put holes in the hole or you’re dealing with a plaster wall, a tension rod can be used. This style of rod is mounted inside the window frame. They are made with inner springs and will expand from side to side using tension (instead of screws) to hold the rod in place, making them a great alternative.

We hope that you found each of the above tips useful in hanging your custom made curtains and that they look exactly how you envisioned them. Whilst having curtains made to your exact specifications will certainly provide your home with a one-of-a-kind look, it’s important that they have also been hung appropriately. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance if required!
