Getting a Fence for Security Purposes

Written by Posted On Friday, 26 August 2016 22:03

There are plenty of reasons to get yourself and your property a decent fence. On one hand, you may want to keep out wild animals, or you may just be trying to keep your dog from chasing after a neighborhood cat or a rabbit in the woods. Finally, the sounds and sights of cars dashing past your home may make you uncomfortable and rob you of a sense of privacy in your own home, so a solid wooden fence can help you redevelop that sense of privacy and feel alone again.

However, for some homeowners, getting a fence really only has one practical reason: security purposes. For these homeowners, the important question is also a pretty simple one: what fence is best for security purposes?

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are the most commonly installed type of fencing in North America, and for a good reason. From private institutions and schools to homeowners, everyone loves putting up the chain link fence as a form of security. One of the major advantages among chain link fences is the fact that they offer nearly perfect visibility, which is a big plus if you want to see who’s outside your property, but less ideal for privacy purposes.

If you find yourself a reputable source for chain link fence supplies such as Fence Factory, however, you can erect a cost-effective and safe fence. As per DoItYourself, not all chain link fences are the same, so make sure yours possesses a thick gauge and impressive height.

Wrought Iron Fences

Wrought iron fences combine security with aesthetics, allowing custom builds and designs that end with a spikey flourish to deter the usual fence jumper from attempting to climb over your fence.

While some wrought iron fences are built mostly just for decorative purposes, there are those that are truly erected with security in mind. However, getting a custom wrought iron fence can be a little pricey, as per Improve Net.

Steel Fences

Steel fences don’t come with the intricacy of wrought iron fences, but what they lose in aesthetics they make up for in practicality. Steel fences are typically very basic – vertical fencing with a few horizontal rails and a sturdy, coated build of solid steel. It’s a little pricey, but worth it if you’re looking for something high and something reliable. With nearly no maintenance needed, these are also popular among homeowners looking to pay a little more than usual.

Dogs

This is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek answer, but if you’re really worried about security and you live in an area where break-ins are common and probably something to expect, then one absolutely necessary precaution is to get yourself a guard dog.

The breed here matters. Mixed breeds work just fine if they’re large enough. Alternatively, you’ll want a dog designed for guarding rather than farm work or family purposes. As per IHeartDogs, there are plenty of effective breeds, from Doberman dogs to Pitbulls and even the Giant Schnauzer. You don’t need a dog with a powerful bite or the ability to run for hours, as a strong bark and intimidating size will do the trick.

Dogs are a large investment, however, and not a serious consideration if you’re planning to keep one simply for security purposes. Some may opt for an electric fence to keep unwanted visitors out, but if you’re worried about neighborhood kids, for example, an electric fence is little more than a legal liability. You’re best off with a sturdy, high metal fence.
