4 Simple Tasks That Could Extend The Life Of Your Home

Home ownership comes with privileges, but it also comes with a unique set of responsibilities. Despite being able to forego these responsibilities to free up more of your time and energy in more interesting things, sooner or later the lack of maintenance manifests itself through irreparable damages that costs hundreds of dollars to replace. Here's four simple tasks you should be doing to extend your household's lifespan.

Clean Your Gutters

Majority of expensive home repairs and replacements incurred by homeowners are avoidable, one of which is gutter maintenance. Clean your gutters at least bi-yearly. Scoop out leaves and other debris from the gutters to protect your home's foundation as well as the surrounding landscape and siding. Use protective gear when cleaning gutters. Wear eye protection and use a stable ladder to reach the roof.

Test Garage Door Opener

This should be done at least every other month to ensure the opener reverses when it encounters a blockade or when the sensor beam is halted. If power goes out and you need to open the garage door, don't call a technician right away. Instead, open it manually. Locate the cord, which is usually colored red, that's suspended from the operator in your garage. Pull on it to disengage the cord from the main system.

Repair A Dripping Faucet

Faucet leaks can result in a large amount of wasted water every day. But before you panic and call a plumber, try resolving it yourself by powering down the main water source. You can also try removing the faucet's handles and inspecting the washers for signs of wear and tear. If you cannot immediately replace the broken part, a makeshift solution to avoid the irritating noise of water dripping into the sink is a string tied around the faucet, which slows down the flow of water.

Keep Pests Out

Regardless of where you live, there's always uninvited critters lurking around in dark and damp areas of the house. Left unchecked, pests can wreak havoc on the property's foundation as well as furniture, ceiling, walls, etc. Manage pest population by hiring a pest control company, like All Seasons Pest Control, that does a regular sweep of the house to detect and treat infestation.

These simple tasks take less than an hour of your week. Following them, however, can save you hundreds of dollars per year. Don't stop with these four tasks, though. Make sure to inspect other parts of the property for signs of damage or wear-and-tear.
